The most interesting article that I've read in a long, long time ... well worth it.

If y'all out there can't read it right now, bookmark it and read it later ... don't miss this one. It's a welcome change from all politics all of the time.

Long live the Belgian Browning Superposed over/under shotgun, the .45 cal. 1911 pistol, and Ma Deuce.

Indeed, a well written worthwhile read. I have used Mister Browning’s innovation to protect hearth and home for decades. His inventions are even now well suited to their intended purpose and have not become obsolete.

Great stuff. Browning had and still has an enormous impact on firearms design, much still unsurpassed.

Volumes could be written about John Moses Browning. This was a very good article about a most extraordinary man.

If Browning didn’t invent it it probably didn’t need inventing.

What a wonderful story of American exceptionalism.

Our children should be reminded often, that it’s no accident of history that America has produced so many geniuses and innovators. There is a direct correlation between the freedom and liberty enjoyed by Americans, and their extraordinary contributions to mankind.

Thanks for posting this. I enjoyed every word.

I think any person interested in American history or guns should read “John M. Browning, American Gunmaker”. The book is very readable and the subject matter is more than fascinating.

It is also well illustrated.

Great article, and thanks for posting. The invocation of that storied name causes folks to doff their caps hereabouts. But this:

The outbreak of World War I was the great crisis of Browning’s lifetime. The gun that started it all — a .32 Caliber FN Model 1900 semiautomatic pistol wielded by the Serbian assassin Gavrilo Princip — was a Browning invention.

That I did not know. And the notion that U.S. troops were issued the Chauchat when the BAR might have been available makes me grind my teeth.

A Browning BTT.

Mr. Browning has protected my life, everyday, for the last 35+ years. I always carry a 1911A1 pattern weapon. My friends make fun of the old girl, but they never have anything to say about the way she shoots.

God bless the US and God bless J.M. Browning.

In the pantheon of small arms designers, a trinity of men named John stands above and apart.

John C. Garand designed the magnificent M1--lauded by Patton as the "greatest single battle implement ever devised by man."

John T. Thompson designed the incomparable Thompson submachine gun.

But John Moses Browning, the greatest of the three, designed an entire arsenal of firearms including semiautomatic handguns, sporting rifles and shotguns, light and heavy machine guns, and even ammunition for them.

I own or have owned a Springfield Model 1911A semiautomatic handgun, a Winchester Model 97 pump-action shotgun, a Browning Auto-5 semiautomatic shotgun, and a Winchester Model 1890 pump-action .22--all John M. Browning designs. I have the deepest respect for this man of great genius.

Obama has been handing out Medals of Freedom to undeserving political hacks and Marxist rabble rousers. John Moses Browning actually deserves one--even posthumously--and will likely never receive one.
