Where exactly does The South begin, anyway? At Harpers Ferry? Just left of Philadelphia? What is the crossroads that divides Southerners from the rest of us, those of us in the East, Midwest, Southwest and West who dont talk with corn in our mouths?
Somebody please buy Ohio Sen. George Voinovich a ticket to the real South, preferably on a slow-moving train, so he can observe the country he helps govern.
Last month, Voinovich charged that Southerners are whats wrong with the Republican Party.
We got too many Jim DeMints and Tom Coburns, he told the Columbus Dispatch, talking about his colleagues from South Carolina and Oklahoma. Its the Southerners. They get on TV and go errrr, errrrr. People hear them and say, These people, theyre Southerners. The partys being taken over by Southerners. What [the] hell they got to do with Ohio?
Lets set aside the fact that Oklahomas panhandle is closer to Santa Fe than the South and dwell on what Voinovich meant: The GOP is overpopulated by unrepresentative white fire-breathers isolated from the rest of America.
When Voinovich refers to Southerners with such Gone With the Windiness, he conjures images of backward, angry rednecks who scream at black schoolchildren, drive pickup trucks emblazoned with Confederate flags and believe the Civil War was about declaring independence from Northern aggressors.

I like this passage:
“In fact, Southerners are uniquely positioned to remake the Republican Party, because they are their country. The South was formed by extraordinary forces of mobility, migration and immigration.”
Voinovich should keep his stupid liberal trap shut.
Did he cry?
He’s just expressing what alot of people feel and think in this country...i’m used to it...nothing new.
Voinovich just needs to go away. I have a lot more in common with southerners than I ever will w/ him.
>>...believe the Civil War was about declaring independence from Northern aggressors.<<
A) No one in the South says Civil War; and yes,
B) It IS a war for independence.
Deo vindice
Voinobich is a NWO paid for whore. When he first ran for US Senate he received more out of state campaign funds than any US senator in history. He even beat out McCain who came in second that year. Much of the money came from New York, but another major chunk came from the Car company execs in Detroit.
He represented me 3 different times, all before I was 18. He always has been a RINO, just not as bad as now.
Meanwhile we can’t seem to get a stinkin townhall meeting out of him in Ohio.
Do they REALLY want to open up this can of worms?
Anybody who supported Dennis Kucinich in any election is not my idea of a good Republican.
So when Voinovich talks about unrepresentative Southerners, whom does he mean? The people of Clarkston, who have absorbed one of the nations largest refugee resettlements, where Congolese, French Africans, Eritreans, Sudanese, Ethiopians, Burmese, Bhutanese, Burundians, Iraqis, Somalis, Turks and Afghans have revitalized the regions business and spiritual life?
This community is nestled just to the north of I285. There are missions there to help them adjust and to teach them English. This is not your Mama’s Atlanta anymore.
Voinovich is the South end of a horse headed north.
When the Atlanta Journal Constitution comes to the defense of our Southland, you know the world is turned upside down.
One of the best things that ever happened to me in my life was when I was 8 years old in 1945 and my parents moved us from Ohio to Florida.
This idiot doesn't understand that the fastest growing part of our country is in the south and west. Not so many years down the road Georgia and North Carolina will have more population than Ohio and I believe S. Carolina will someday pass them also.
Ohio is welcome to this guy.
