US Colleges Say Hiring US Students a Bad Deal
Slashdot ^ | 8/13/9 | CmdrTaco

Posted on 08/13/2009 4:46:27 PM PDT by Clint Williams

theodp writes

"Many US colleges and universities have notices posted on their websites informing US companies that they're tax chumps if they hire students who are US citizens. 'In fact, a company may save money by hiring international students because the majority of them are exempt from Social Security (FICA) and Medicare tax requirements,' advises the taxpayer-supported University of Pittsburgh (pdf) as it makes the case against hiring its own US students. You'll find identical pitches made by the University of Delaware, the University of Cincinnati, Kansas State University, the University of Southern California, the University of Wisconsin, Iowa State University, and other public colleges and universities. The same message is also echoed by private schools, such as John Hopkins University, Brown University, Rollins College and Loyola University Chicago."

Since when have the majority of US university faculties cared about anything other than their radical, anti-American leftwing agenda?

And of course their own pocketbooks.

Not in my time, and I've been around long enough that some of the next generation are graduates too (with post-grad degrees).

IMHO responders miss the point. Our government taxes us at such a high rate that our businesses cannot afford to hire us. This says everything anyone needs to know about our rotten government.

What we need is somewhere between 400 and 535 lamp posts and about 10,000 feet of rope strong enough to hold a 250 pound C********** or S******, doubled to hold Gerald Nadler!

Let the games begin!

Forget the lamp posts. Use the hallways of Congress instead. Let them be a reminder to their successors of the trust the public has given them.

And the stench might actually improve the place.

0.9+ (No, I'm not serious and don't wish I would have to be, but I'd be happy if they merely read this. Don't expect that to happen either...)

I don’t understand why we’re mad at the universities for this. The statement is true, are they supposed to lie? Maybe instead we should change the situation, like get rid of socsec or at least make imported workers pay into the system.

The educational establishment in this country is the indoctrination arm of Big Government. Their salaries are paid by the State with funds extorted from the private sector.

Just as the MSM are the public relations arm. Just as the democrat party is it's official political party.

They are all appendages of the same body.

There was recently a story about a student who had graduated from college and could not get a job their field of choice. The former student wanted to sue the university.

At first I thought the idea was ridiculous, but after seeing this article, I believe that student may have a point.

Educating foreign students is a huge source of profit for the education establishment. By helping foreign students get jobs, the schools are simply hyping their own income stream.

Incredible is right.

From the University of Delaware:

What if I want to continue to employ international students after their work authorization expires?

With a bit of planning ahead, an employer can hire international students to continue to work for them in the H-1B visa category for a total of six years.

Doesn’t an employer have to prove that international students are not taking jobs from a qualified American?

No. American employers are not required to document that a citizen of another country did not take a job from a qualified American if that person is working under an F-1, J-1 or H-1B visa.
