Ten days ago they caught Don Tracey's radioactive blood.
In what one U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer says is now "a daily occurrence," American border agents are pulling aside people who have undergone nuclear medical procedures such as stress tests and radiation treatments. You could say they're now catching Canadians with glowing hearts.
They're also catching everything from glazed plates made with naturally radioactive earth to industrial radiation sources used in surveying equipment.
The discoveries come as a result of the U.S. installing "radiation portal monitors" so sensitive that they can detect radiation emanating from the luminescent dial of an old Second World War military compass.
Most people crossing the border are oblivious to the array of equipment they have to pass through. But now Tracey knows some of it scans for low-level radiation.
Tracey and his wife Yuki were on their way to Lake Samish, Wash., on their motorcycle on July 25 when they were stopped at the Aldergrove border crossing. Tracey said an officer almost immediately asked him if he had undergone a medical treatment in the U.S.
"I thought that was a bit odd, and I told him no," Tracey said.
The pair were then taken aside, where another officer asked him the same question. That's when Tracey, 65, remembered he'd undergone a stress test using the radioactive isotope thorium at Lions Gate Hospital two weeks earlier.

I believe the detectors can tell different types and energies of radiation apart, so that they can verify accurately whether they are seeing the results of a reported medical usage of radioisotopes.
Just use your judgement. If they look like The Toxic Avenger then check them over thoroughly.
Looks are SO deceiving, as the beginnings of a Redneck Taliban (literally... I mean madly jihading moon god Slammies who look like your Bounty lumberjacks) appear in North America.
Al Baby,
Did anything like the ever happen to you?
If he says glow-in-the-dark BRD do not believe him
=o)
Of course, if you make all Canadians cross at night, no scanner is necessary ;)
I found out on a trip the the nearby nuclear power station with a Boy Scout troop that radiation detectors can be set off by..........
the mantles used in Coleman gas or propane lanterns.
I had a hip replacement and now carry a card from the hospital verifying it - it saves me from a strip search at the court house.
The story reminds me of an incident over 30 years ago when we had a CBR alert drill. I was wearing one of the last Army issue radium dial watches. I entered the bunker and the private with the radiation detector just about had a heart attack, Sarge! What do I do? This is only a drill! I told him to follow his orders. He was too shook up to remember them. I asked if maybe I should be sent to decon. I had fun there too - with my sleeves down no one saw the watch.

Some more of that great Canadian health care.
The Navy used to run a Nuclear Power Training Unit in the Idaho desert. They had done lots of experiments out there since the 50’s and in the old days dumped the effluent straight to what was called the ‘mile long ditch.’
One night a young sailor was walking the perimeter to stay awake and saw a rabbit. Being a young man, his followed his instincts and threw a rock at it. He killed it.
Now, fresh rabbit meat can be nice so he stuffed it in his bag and headed for the exit at the end of his shift. It set off every detector in the building. That rabbit was hot enough to power a small neighborhood.
The Navy was not amused.
“...glazed plates made with naturally radioactive earth ...”
hmm...
Does this make anyone else wonder about plates made in China?
Due to Canadian health care rationing, Canadians are routinely referred to US medical facilities for diagnostics and treatment.
No to a buddy of mine, but that’s another story ;)
This suggests to me that Canadians are exposed to more radiation during their procedures than Americans.
Another sign of the great socialized mess that is Canadian healthcare??
