Schreiber advises people who have undergone radiation treatments to carry a letter or note from their doctor. While it won't stop the need for a thorough scan, it will help speed up the process, he said. "Even with a note, we still need to determine the source of the radiation," he said.

I believe the detectors can tell different types and energies of radiation apart, so that they can verify accurately whether they are seeing the results of a reported medical usage of radioisotopes.

I had a hip replacement and now carry a card from the hospital verifying it - it saves me from a strip search at the court house.
The story reminds me of an incident over 30 years ago when we had a CBR alert drill. I was wearing one of the last Army issue radium dial watches. I entered the bunker and the private with the radiation detector just about had a heart attack, Sarge! What do I do? This is only a drill! I told him to follow his orders. He was too shook up to remember them. I asked if maybe I should be sent to decon. I had fun there too - with my sleeves down no one saw the watch.
