His life didn't become a complete fraud until he joined the military and visioned himself as a war hero who crawled through the dirtiest trenches and leach filled swamps, shooting gooks and saving babies, and going on top secret mission into Cambodia, freezing in swamps as Buddhists celebrated Christmas.
