During his recent HBO special, "Tall, Dark and Chicano," comedian George Lopez tore a hole in the Big Tent. Incensed that 31 Senate Republicans had voted against Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to the Supreme Court, Lopez informed the GOP that it would never again get the votes of Latinos.
In fact, he said, given changing demographics, Republicans might as well get used to losing in the years to come because "you won't win a . . . pie-eating contest."
That's harsh, but fair. Republicans know not what they did. They're only fooling themselves if they think they won't pay a price for their petty opposition to the nation's first Latina justice.
Remember when Republicans used to say that people should take responsibility for their actions? Never mind. They didn't mean it. Not when it comes to Senate Republicans trying to dodge responsibility for voting against Sotomayor.
They might be able to stand behind their votes if they weren't afraid that they were standing on quicksand. They're terrified that Hispanics will be sore winners and take retribution at the ballot box starting in 2010 and possibly lasting for decades.
In fact, Republicans are so desperate to avoid incurring the wrath of one of the fastest growing parts of the electorate that they've pulled a page from the Democrats' playbook.

Uh, I would say that a justice who allows her personal racism to effect her rulings from the bench, such as in the white firefighters' case, is INDEED a judicial activist. Does Navarrette EVER pull his head out of his behind?
George Lopez is boring, not funny, and an asshole. Other than that he’s a great guy.
Well, Paul Rodriguez might have a completely different take on that..... and he used to be a Hollywood liberal like Lopez.
Even though I’m hispanic, I would have never voted for Sotomayor, race is not how I base my decision on who i would vote for. MOre important for me is whether or not I agree with the person on the issue. Sotomayor lost me with her affirmative action decision.
Navarette is certifiable. Nothing new there.
FYI, Alberto Gonzales was the first Hispanic and Mexican-American to serve as United States Attorney General.
I don’t think he’s very tall. Or very smart.
JUST HOLD ON A MINUTE HERE. It is the MSM/Infotainment people who decide who is funny, boring, or an all-enveloping anus, not you, LFM. For example, Roseanne Barr is really funny, Joy Behar deserves hours of your viewing time, and Rosie O'Donnell is an extremely well-educated and astute social critic and authority on parenting.
Please watch Letterman and O'Brien tonight. They are really important and may have this Lopezanus on.
You want me to watch Letterman? I watched that moron once and that was more then enough
It's dirty, hard work, but someone from this site has to do it!
