It's the kind of number that makes you stop and say, "What?!!!!!!!!"
230 miles per gallon.
That's the fuel economy GM expects the electric Chevy Volt to deliver when it comes out late next year. The company made the announcement this morning in Detroit and already skeptics, fans, and the general public are debating if the Volt's mega-fuel efficiency will be a "game changer" for the industry and General Motors.
My opinion: if the Volt can consistently deliver anything close to that mileage, it will go a long ways toward removing the sting of the expected $40,000 price.
The skeptics believe Volts mileage will not come anywhere close to what GM is promising. After all, the mileage on many cars and trucks is, in real world driving, well below what the company promises. In addition, critics of the Volt say that with gas being relatively cheap, there will be limited demand for the car.

Even if it gets 230 mpg it will cost more to drive if crap and trade is passed because the cost of electricity (Volt fuel) will skyrocket per our Nazi Fuehrer.

HEHEHEHEHE Those were the days. I had a Porsche 911 like that. Took a 78 911 that the motor had been trashed and dropped in a gray market 88 Turbo with tall gears in it. The thing put 480 HP on the ground. It had a top speed of right about 140 but getting there was like Oh My Lord.
The first date got off to rather strained start. Apparently Recaro seats, roll over bars and five point restraints dont mix with dresses or women's sensibilities too well...

“back in the day” the high 10’s and mid 11’s were good enough for me.
Now a 5.7L Hemis Jeep unlimited Rubicon, and an 08 Audi RS4 cabrio are good enough for me...

If the electricity comes from wind or solar, there is no "per gallon" issue involved. For that matter, not if it comes from hydro or nuke.
There is a financial cost if you get any sort of electricity off the grid, but you could in theory charge the batteries using wind or solar at no cost, other than the original purchase price and maintenance.
But you are correct that the energy efficiency of electric cars is usually wildly overstated.
I saw a calculation on how much poop would have to be removed daily from NY city if everything today was done by horse.
I don’t remember the number but it was incredible.

1991 VW Jetta Diesel w/ 279,000 miles. Fully depreciated vehicle in good mechanical condition. Routinely gets 41-44 MPG. Fuel cost is presently 5.66 cents/mile.
I love the Hemi Challenger also, but looks like 2009 will be 1971 all over again with the end of the musclecar. Farking do gooder busibodies in Washinton and our poofer president.

Yeah, I want to get a hold of that new 300HP six Camaro engine for my ‘98 Firebird. Though I’ll probably end up doing intake heads, cam, exhaust on the six already in there. Somewhere between 250 and 300 HP I’d guess (though lighter, and with the six trans/rear). Milage on that new Camaro six is pretty damn decent though.
That would be a sweet ride.

Look for a surcharge on your electric bill to pay for roads. They can’t lose that tax revenue.
Well....you need a truck to do all that....you must change your habits and be satisfied with less....its for the common good....dontcha know.....
Too bad they can’t get four people in that thing. It would help with the peddling.
