NY-23: Owens Gets the Democratic Nod
PolitickerNY ^ | August 10, 2009 | Jimmy Vielkind

BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE—It's Bill Owens.

Nearly 12 hours after they first convened at the Minnowbrook Conference Center on the shore of this Adirondack gem, the 11 county party chairs comprising the 23rd Congressional District picked Bill Owens, a Plattsburgh attorney, as the Democratic Party's candidate to replace John McHugh in Congress.

He will face Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava, the Republican designee, and Doug Hoffman, the pick of the Conservative Party.

A special election to replace McHugh has not yet been set, but it is expected to fall on Election Day in November.

Just as Sulla and Marius were not just in conflict personally

Evidence is that they hated each other's guts actually.

But to return to the topic of this thread, it appears that the local GOP has nominated a Republican who is about as far left as Obama. There is no benefit from supporting this candidate. Her defeat would make it possible to elect someone better in a year. Meantime there will be no organizational votes where she might vote correctly.

The current map is a bipartisan gerrymander.

NY is always an interesting case.

The state Republicans ran someone similar for GOVERNOR years ago, Canadian-born Pierre Rinfret. The man actually campaign AT abortion mills, and he had to change registrations to be Republican.

What NY has are well defined Liberal and Conservative parties that act as a sort of safety valve. Because candidates can be on multiple lines, these parties rarely undermine good candidates. When Al D’Amato beat sickly incumbent liberal Jacob Javits in the primary, Javits had the Liberal Line, D’Amato the Republican and Conservative, with uber-leftie Liz Holtzman on the Democrat line. D’Amato won with 45% in a squeaker in the general election.

"Politics is the art of the possible"

It will not be possible for Dede to win. People like me will guarantee it. This district is filled with pickup trucks with gun racks and the rest of 'em are little old ladies, French Catholics, who want nothing to do with Dede. (Look at the map.) The difficult part will not be bashing Dede. The challenge will be to keep the anti-Dede voters from voting DEM, but instead get them into Hoffman's column. The conservatives have already misplayed their hand here. Do you notice how the DEMS waited until the GOP and Conservatives declared themselves, before the DEMS nominated a candidate? The big challenge here will be that the swing voters will realized what a lemon Dede is and they will swing to the DEM. It will be a challenge to bring them into Hoffman's camp.

I would in no way advocate voting for her. It sounds as though the GOP in that district has been taken over by RATS.

Sounds like it is a lost cause. While NY is the only state which has had a Conservative Party (at least in name) capable of winning an important seat on occassion this race seems safely in the hands of the RATs.

Another example of the complete inability of conservative forces to organize and win. Caught sleeping at the switch yet again.

Way up there? For a November election? No chance.

No, Dede had a few of her buddies in as county chairpersons. Next summer, she won’t be nominated and she cannot win a primary up there.

She won the nomination on the 3rd ballot; her supporters made a big push and the social conservatives were asleep.

It is not a lost cause. We will build support this fall for an eventual victory in Nov 2010. And redistricting will create a small scale free-for-all for 2012.

guess I better get started on the door knocking if snow is in the forecast.

It’s a boycott of course. NYS Right to Life has not even bought a map of NY yet. They are working on their interior decorating. “Please don’t bother us with political stuff.”

Up in the Northern Adirondacks a typical day is below freezing in November, with three inches of precipitation for the month, otherwise known as four feet of snow.

You are correct. It’s not Steele’s fault.
In fact, I think he said that no money would go toward her campaign if she were the nominee.
