Only 9 Percent of Utah Doubts Obama's Citizenship
Washington Independent ^ | 8/10/09 | David Weigel

Posted on 08/10/2009 12:58:11 PM PDT by steve-b

Some good news on the "birther" front: a Deseret News/KSL-TV poll finds that only 9 percent of Utahns (13 percent of Republicans) "don't believe the president was born in the United States." The biggest population of Obama doubters in the Beehive state? Conservatives, 18 percent of whom believe Obama was born outside the United States, having not been informed by James Kirchick that this whole conspiracy theory is being pushed by liberals.

So why does rock-solid Republican Utah have fewer "birthers" than, the deep South, or even fewer than blue Virginia and North Carolina? A lack of racial polarization has something to do with it. Utah, like the rest of the great plains and western states, got bluer in 2008 despite overall McCain victories and despite having a very, very white population. In Utah, Obama got 327,670 votes in 2008, up from the 241,199 votes that Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) got in 2004. For the first time since 1964, the Democratic candidate for president actually carried Salt Lake County. This happened with 31 percent of Utah whites backing Obama. Not even close to a winning margin; but in Louisiana, for example, Obama only won 14 percent of the white vote.

Misses the point.

This is not difficult.

This is a guy with almost no paper trail whatever and a big hole where his biography is supposed to be. Every relevent document about him is sealed or disappeared.

I make no accusations; I cast no aspersions. I ask two things: the original birth certificate and what citizenship did he claim in college.

Thats it. Its very simple.

Irrelevant.

The requirement for a President to be a natural born citizen isn’t predicated on uninformed opinion. Let’s see the long form birth certificate and then we’ll know. That’s all. Just show it.

The opinion of uninformed people in Utah is irrelevant to the case at hand.

Polls do not equal facts. At one time, 99.8% of the world believed the earth was flat. How did that work out?

Personally, I have no idea if ObaMao was born in Hawaii, Kenya or somewhere else. But I do have to wonder why he is spending millions of dollars in legal fees to prevent disclosure of a $10 document.

But you can see the new meme in action.

Anyone who opposes O is a racist, or a fascist. Its how they avoid engaging any argument.

This is going to get worse before it gets better.

Why are they so worried about the birthers? People on Obama's side that he wants this controversy as a distraction from what he's doing behind the scenes. Also, birtherism, if pinned on the GOP, marginalizes the GOP as a fringe, estremist, shrinking minority of white frat boys.

This reminds me of the argument that the demise of the Soviet Union was planned in order to set up Russia as the more powerful successor state with no burden of communism.

I'm sorry, neither argument flies a quarter of inch off the ground.

Obama takes big hits with birtherism, when all he has to do, is release the long form birth certificate and college finance records. Where's the paperwork on his legal name change from Barry Soetoro to Barack Obama? What passport did he use to go to Pakistan in 1981?

Ending this for all but the true nutcases in within Obama's power. Easy, but why no release of papers?

Why would he want to end this? It's the biggest political gift since Gerald Ford declared that there was no Soviet domination of Poland.

As a Utahn, I would say that many Utahns lack a sense of skepticism regarding what leaders claim about themselves.

I wouldn't be surprised if even in Utah there are more than 9% 9-11 Truthers, but that’ll never reach the paper.

This is how it works. I ask a simple question. He refuses to answer. So I ask again. And he refuses to answer again and sends out his flacks to muddy the water.

But its still a simple question that he still won’t answer. I have to assume that he can’t answer it because he dare not answer it. So, the preferred response is to crank up the noise machine.

Its still a simple question.

That’s false, Steve. The issue at play is the constitutionality of Obama. Obama sure is spending a lot of capital (political and otherwise) protecting his long form birth certificate.

Is there anyone who will claim to even have been there when Obama was born? No? Of course not, except that his aunt in Kenya claims to have been present at his birth.

It’s too bad the MSM isn’t following up on the facts of this case. That’s okay, we’ll get the job done anyway.

Silly article. But the comment on the site was pretty good:

Also, if Obama was born outside the US the Mormons would probably know about it. That's kinda their thing.

Birthers, perseverance and déjà vu again and again.

I remember Ruby Ridge and Waco.. both were big topics in the alternate media for years. Talk radio was my primary source.

After years of being targets of insults, ridicule, and threats the few brave citizens triumphed and our America won. Congress finally! made an honest effort to learn the truth about both Ruby Ridge and Waco.

The MSM's attitude and the majority opinion were that the cases were closed and "those nuts" are despicable.

I think that it is more than fair to say that those hearings revealed that our government had not been telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

How old is the birther movement? One year old?

The Ruby Ridge/Waco cover ups were, at most, to protect relatively low-level employees -- here the president and his administration could be at stake.

This issue is being misplayed. Obama was certified eligible by 50 Secretaries of State. Birthers should be screaming at those charged with the certification responsibility if they think that job was not performed properly. Our Constitution protects Obama from self-incrimination, and rightly so.
