Ahead of President Obamas arrival in Mexico, immigration was prompting significant behind-the-scenes debate. But it was Mexicans entering Canada, not the United States, that was the contentious issue.
Too many Mexicans, the Canadian government complained, were fraudulently claiming political asylum in Canada, overwhelming the system. So Canada announced last month that it would begin requiring Mexican nationals to secure visas before entering the country, a decision that sparked outrage in Mexico.
The Mexicans struck back with an announcement that Canadian diplomats and government officials would now require visas to enter Mexico.
Although some angry Mexican lawmakers urged President Felipe Calderon to go further and require visas for all Canadian visitors, Mr. Calderon held off, not wanting to further damage Mexicos tourism industry, which relies heavily on North American visitors.
The annual summit, an outgrowth of North American Free Trade Agreement signed in 1994, is designed to put the United States and its northern and southern neighbors on the same page when it comes to policy. In fact, officials said Mr. Obama, Mr. Calderon and Mr. Harper intended to forge common strategies for climate change, fighting the swine flu virus and responding to the debilitating economic crisis.
Mexico said it intended to raise ....a dispute that began when the U. S. Congress canceled a program, in violation of NAFTA, that allowed Mexico trucks to operate in the United States.
Mexico responded to that decision by imposing billions of dollars in tariffs on American products.
Another irritant is the Buy American clause in the Obama administrations economic stimulus plan, which both Canada and Mexico oppose. An aide to Mr. Harper told reporters last week that he wouldnt be surprised if the Canadian leader raised the issue of protectionism with Mr. Obama.

Obama attending first US-Canada-Mexico summit
[snip]The U.S. neighbors will want Obama to explain where America's economic recovery is going because both countries saw their own fortunes fall as a result of problems in the U.S. Obama will hear complaints from Calderon and Harper about "Buy American" requirements in the $787 billion economic stimulus package.
Climate change is a priority, too.
The three leaders also are expected to take a joint stand on a recent problem in their hemisphere the June coup in Honduras that saw President Manuel Zelaya ousted by the military.
Obama planned a meeting late Sunday afternoon with Calderon. He did not schedule a separate session with Harper while in Mexico....
Obama's meeting with Calderon will continue his drive for a new tone in U.S.-Mexico relations.
Like Bush, Obama has emphasized tighter border security. But he also has pledged to renew immigration overhaul efforts, including a citizenship path for illegal immigrants.
During his April visit, Obama made a welcome acknowledgment to Mexicans that Americans share the blame for violence south of border because of drug consumption and gun trafficking. Since then, the U.S. has made a bigger effort to halt the southward flow of guns and money.

Prospects dim for Mexican firearms treaty Drug violence worries Mexico
________
[snip] "This traffic of heavy weaponry from American gun stores to Mexican drug cartels will once again feature in talks between the U.S. and Mexico when President Barack Obama and Mexican President Felipe Calderon meet at a North American summit in Guadalajara on Aug. 9 and Aug. 10. Mexico with its strict gun laws has long complained that the vast majority of firearms used by the gangs wrecking havoc here are brought in El Norte. Meanwhile, Obama has said more unequivocally than any president before that the U.S. has responsibility to stop American guns getting into the hands of the mobsters"

America should not be have any dealings with a country that treats its citizens the way Mexico does. What kind of a country encourages its own citizens to leave and go somewhere else if they intend to survive? Mexico sucks!
Then, we can truly test the "superiority and efficiencies" of their socialized medicine networks and welfare programs.
“Too many Mexicans”
We have the same problem but, they’re not even *asking*.
I think it would be terrible if Obama’s entourage was hijacked by drug lords and held for ransom in Mexico.
What does “The Divine One,” and his Apostles plan to do at this meeting in order to increase the amount of harm to our Republic. They intuitively choose the most harmful course of action and do so in clear conscience and in good faith.
I'd bet 90% of all asylum claims made in western nations are fraudulent.
NAFTA is dead....if not severely dying
Funny that Canada doesnt want Mexican illegals. Mexico is such a third world dunghole that it must rely on foreign remittances to home to make their economy less of a basket case
Two young women from Thunder Bay, Ontario left after that horror. The Mexican authorities said is was more than likely THEY were the killers. These young women went through hell. Wisely the Canadian authorities asked for real proof before extradition.
The Mexicans are still looking for the hotel security guard, who vanished next day. I put out to all Canadians- is it worth it? Lots of safe places States Side. Just check them out first with yer friendly travel agent, that is all.
