Thousands of camels will be shot from helicopters and turned into burgers in a bid to halt their trail of havoc across Australia.
Marksmen plan to gun the animals down amid concern the thirsty dromedaries are barging into people's homes and ripping up their bathrooms looking for water.
Government officials plan to wipe out 650,000 of the feral population in the remote Outback area of the country.
The creatures were first introduced to Australia in the 1840s to help explorers travel through the Australian desert.
There are now about one million camels roaming the country.
They compete with sheep and cattle for food, trample vegetation and invade remote settlements in search of water.
On a number of occasions they have scared residents - tearing apart bathrooms and ripping up water pipes.

Oh cue the Palin-haters.
Just wait ‘til they blame Sarah Palin.
Disgusting animals, they slobber and can barf up their own guts when feeling amorous. I mean actually spit their stomachs out of their mouths. If you’ve never seen it....you’re lucky.
Cigarettes.....
If you ever wondered what that mystery meat was in a Big Mac?
It always seems like Austrailia is being overrun by something. Before it was rabbits, kangaroos, and cats. Now it is camels. I think it has also been overrun by liberals too, the most dangerous invader of all.
Ya better have one tall ceiling if your going to mount one of them on the wall.
Now, that's what I call "going ugly early"...
Don’t forget the Cane Toads.
Ok, are they camels or dromedaries, or both?
I would think they also compete with indigenous populations for food also, such as Kangaroos. There will be a huge outcry from bleeding hearts animal lovers who think that some how there is an infinite food and water supply in the world for all wild animals.
Does this mean that the annoying camels will be ejected forcefully from flying helicopters?
I just had to read this expecting to see some stupid comment and I found it.
Camel exporter Paddy McHugh, who runs camel catching operations throughout Australia, said a cull would be ineffective.
“What happens in 15 years when the numbers come back again? Do we waste another £9.5m,” McHugh said.”
And what, pray tell, does Paddy expect will happen if nothing is done? There are no predators and they multiply exponentially. Our deer population here is the same we are being absolutely over run and the bleeding hearts are happy to forbid control as well as happy to see them starve and be crippled by car encounters.
BTW, that is a lot of camel burgers like round about 1/4 to 1/2 billion pounds (depending on yeild)?
I can just imagine the YouTube clip of a targeting laser hitting the camel’s hump then a Hellfire exploding the beast dead center......AWESOME!!!
ROTFLMAO
Good point.
What calibre is a camel after all?
