'Hero' Greek woman sets fire to drunken Briton's genitals
Telegraph (UK) ^ | 06 Aug 2009 | Paul Anast

A 26-year old Greek woman has become an overnight national hero after setting fire to the genitals of a 23-year old drunken Briton who allegedly tried to sexually assault her in a crowded bar.

The unidentified woman from the fiercely proud island of Crete won herself even more praise by doing the right legal thing – turning herself over to police and the courts to be put on trial for what she claimed was her "right to self-defence". ..

According to a police statement issued last night the incident occurred at a club in the notorious coastal resort of Malia, which is dominated by young Britons seeking all-night revelry. It alleged the Briton took down his trousers and started waving his genitals at a number of girls...

After asking him to stop harassing her, the police said, she poured the alcoholic drink Sabucco on his genitals (an Italian brand type of Greek ouzo or French Pernod drink). This again allegedly failed to stop his advances, so the woman seized a lighter and set fire to the alcohol-drenched genitals, local press reports said.

Your assertion of her being a “scorned woman” is specious.

Debate the actual reported details at will, but pejorative wording is inflammatory and dishonest.

Speaking of which, I must apologize for the “Is that you, Barack” comment. It was inflammatory and uncalled for. I regret having written that to you. (I don’t believe in “non-apology apologies”, and will not stoop to using one for myself)

his genitals weren't burnt. he was burnt from his neck to his belly button, as if she splashed him while he was wearing a button down shirt... then lit it."

Sorry, Sten, but as far as I am concerned -- when a man forces his penis into your hand (or any other part of your body) without your consent and against all your best verbal and physical resistance, then you've got a right to do whatever you want to that penis and to whoever is attached to it!

You are acting like this woman "planned the attack". Struggling, she threw a drink on him, hoping that would stop him. When it didn't, she lit him up. Do you really think that she thought about the proof of the alcohol and just how badly it would burn (chest, etc)? She was probably as shocked as he was that it made a fire that big --but if that's what it took to stop him, so be it!

And speaking of which, why didn't his fellow Brits try and step in to stop him? He was parading around with his penis hanging out, assaulting women! Why didn't they protect the woman?

This woman was on her own -- and she did what she had to do to protect herself. No apologies. And if she goes to prison, I am sending her flowers and letters of support!

agree on the kick in the nuts, as that will heal. a burn will not

2nd degree burns heal just fine. They are really no worse than a very severe sun-burn. He'll be in quite a bit of pain for a while, but he should fully recover.

so burning, stabbing, and shooting would all be ok when confronted with a persistent drunk person... who exposes himself and forcibly fondles a woman, attempting to get her to "touch" him.

Ummmm.... Yes.

again, there is no evidence other than her word that he had exposed his genitals. you are right, wouldn’t his friends stop him? most likely yes. so that doesn’t jive. his account of her walking up to him out of the blue as they were leaving, splashing him and lighting him up rings a bit truer and fits with the injuries.

seriously, try to remember the duke lacrosse case and its outcome before passing judgement... it wasn’t that long ago.

“He’s going to be crippled for life by this.”

Second degree burns means he may have some scarring, but he will recover and be fully functional, not crippled. Frankly it's better than he deserves. He is a candidate for a Darwin award if there ever was one. He is a class A idiot. Some people who act like he did end up dead.

He is lucky his groping victim didn't have a boyfriend with her or he might be going home in a casket.

It’s all fun and games until someone gets their alcohol-drenched genitals set on fire.

“didn't any of you learn anything from the duke lacrosse case? the days of women being innocent victims are long gone.”

So your contention is that because the accuser of the duke lacrosse players was a lying biotch, that means every woman is a lying biotch? Are you out of your mind perhaps? Believe me when I assure you that some women are still innocent victims of sexual assault. The days are not long gone as you assert.

Sorry. Setting someone on fire is never a legitimate form of self defense. She should see the inside of a prison so that she learns it’s not ok to set a man on fire for behaving badly. I’m sure she and her friends thought it was very funny.

He should probably see the inside of a prison too, but he is also more likely to have LEARNED his lesson.

“sounds like she didn't like him leaving without her... burned him as a scorned woman might...”

I read both articles and that wasn't mentioned as a motive in either. You are being disingenuous in your defense of a drunken jerk. How sad.

I have to disagree. Everybody loves to hate tourists and soldiers, but the also love to make their living off of them. Setting someone on fire is never the solution.

To: Alas Babylon!

Ironically, I would be more sympathetic if she had shot him than thrown a drink on him and set it on fire.

You are right. She should have shot him, but I expect she forgot to bring her gun.

It’s also ok to set a smoker on fire. Everyone will just laugh and say they got what they deserved. The guy was probably smoking.

aHA! Just as I suspected, he was SMOKING!

btw, if he did it to himself, I laugh in his general direction and say there IS justice in the universe.

I can think of many, many instances where the immolation of a single individual would have made the world a better place.

This guy learned his lesson, and it’s a lesson for the rest of his kind.
