It is in many ways the weirdest shard of reporting from those years, and its testimony is from no less than the former president of France:
The president of the United States, in a top-secret phone call to a major European ally, asked for French troops to join American soldiers in attacking Iraq as a mission from God. Now out of office, Chirac recounts that the American leader appealed to their "common faith" (Christianity) and told him: "Gog and Magog are at work in the Middle East . The biblical prophecies are being fulfilled . This confrontation is willed by God, who wants to use this conflict to erase his people's enemies before a New Age begins."Is this true?...

It seems more likely to me that Chirac would lie than that GWB would use such language to him.
It's awkward to say openly, but now-departed President Bush is a religious crackpot, an ex-drunk of small intellect who "got saved." He never should have been entrusted with power to start wars.
If GW wanted to “erase” the enemies of “his people,” (presumably the Jews) he had much more effective means at his control than pleading for support from France.
So he took info as gospel from here:

to talk about in the Atlantic?
That’s some good reporting there. No wonder mags and papers are tanking.
Posting hearsay as an open question is not journalism, Andrew? The reason it is most likely not true is that any mature individual in Bush’s position can envision an Andrew Sullivan at some later date making hay off of such an encounter and would defer to more diplomatic language based on just that.
It’s funny how Sullivan is willing to print this but leaves the open secret about John Edward’s baby Momma to the National Equirer when virtually everyone knew the truth. Lame Lame Lame...Andrew never disappoints.
I say B as in B., S as in S.
There is no evidence that GW Bush believes that the Land Of Israel is anything special to his Christian faith.
This is leftist fantasy unrelated to any verified reality.
At it again, steve? Go away!
True; look at how the "birther" nonsense has spread over FR like kudzu....
bttt
of small intellect
I didn’t know Yale accepted people of small intellect. But, of course, looking at the Senate and Congress lately, I can see where most colleges do accept people of small intellect and we elected them!Oh, did we ever get Obama’s grades in college?
Posting Andrew Sullivan now? How absolutely fabulous of you!!!
Not as unfortunately as agreeing with the House Troll.
