Economists can argue back and forth in the media about the effect of big government programs such as the stimulus package and Obamacare but few things have illustrated government waste as effectively as this disturbing YouTube video in which a well running Volvo engine was destroyed as part of the Cash for Clunkers program. This video is currently going viral on the Web and has sparked outraged comments from many people whom I suspect have previously remained somewhat uninterested in the often elusive topic of economics. However, the wasteful destruction of this car seems to have awakened an economic sense of revulsion to an extent rarely seen before.
Here is a sampling of their YouTube comments which are in sharp contrast to the glowing praise of the Cash for Clunkers program prevalent in the MSM:

Same here. I actually looked into the program for hubby's 1999 GMC crewcab w/~250,000 miles on it (mine is a 2005 GMC crewcab with 98,000 miles) as he hit a 6 point buck on the way to work last week and it qualified, but I couldn't bear the thought of trading such a dependable vehicle in for a clown car. She is now in the shop getting a $2800 face lift courtesy of GEICO.

This is crazy!....The whack left wants you on bikes or walking everywhere. That car was not a clunker! What the hell is this program trying to do? This crappola will not stand!....

Another thing to recall about the “Cash for Clunkers” program is how it hurts the poor. The program will take these “clunkers” off the street and give them to the government to destroy. But these are precisely the kinds of cars that poor or fixed-income people tend to purchase. Most of these “clunkers” are of course in fine shape, but they are not “green” enough according to government determinations. So poor people who cannot afford to purchase new, government-approved (and thus artificially expensive) automobiles will be told to “go take a hike” – literally!
The government having melted down these “clunkers,” the market in low priced used cars will dry up, thus driving up cost and further hurting poor and working people as well as seniors and others on fixed income. Grandma who just needs a cheap old car to get down to the pharmacy for her prescriptions will thus be forced to walk or hire a cab, as the finance companies will take a look at her social security income and say “next!”
Cash for clunkers is an attack on the poor for the benefit of government-connected Big Auto big-wigs and GMAC-style bankster/moneylenders. As with most government programs, the poor get the short end of the stick.
if we are going to destroy perfectly good automobiles, why not just have a big nationally televised Demolition Derby live from the Rose Bowl each Sunday night. At least then we can sell tickets and ad time and make some of our money back.

I think of my daughter and her husband driving around in a little car thing with over 200K on it, gotta climb in the backseat and over as driver’s door don’t work.
She is struggling to buy an old pickup truck so she isn’t left all day with baby and no transport.
It makes me sick.
Or what about some young teenager needs a car to get a job, even if at the local burger joint? How about a Katrina victim, maybe give some of those cars to them...how about a sale, auction them off...put proceeds in homeless shelters?

As someone who used to mess with engines, this makes me sick. It’s like taking your pet to the vet to be euthanized. I watched the olds aurora video too. They drain the oil and pour in a mix of water, silica, and sand to cause the engine to sieze. That should happen to a few politicians.

I think this was calculated destruction on his part. He is a marxist and loves destroying prosperity of any kind. He intends to beat America into the ground.
