Gun foes see new hope with Sotomayor
Washington Times ^ | August 4, 2009 | Stephen Dinan

After years of losing, gun control advocates say this week's vote on confirming Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court will be their long-awaited win that shatters conventional wisdom and proves that the Second Amendment is no longer the unstoppable force of Washington politics.

Proponents of gun control say the National Rifle Association (NRA) and similar groups have overreached. They point to a Senate vote last month blocking an effort to expand concealed-carry laws.

"The lesson that's going to come out of this is you can vote against the NRA and still win, and win in gun-friendly areas," said Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the nation's leading gun control group, which is billing this week's vote as a chance to defeat the NRA.

Gun rights supporters dismissed suggestions that they've lost their long hold on the Capitol. The NRA's spokesman dared lawmakers to test Second Amendment voters at their "own peril."

Since the 2000 elections, few lawmakers have bucked gun advocacy groups, and the NRA in particular. The powerful lobby had proved too often that it could swing elections in battleground states simply by sending its traditional election-time blaze-orange postcards telling voters how their elected officials scored on gun rights.

When an effort by Sen. John Thune, South Dakota Republican, to expand reciprocity for concealed-carry laws throughout the nation failed July 22 to overcome a filibuster in a 58-39 vote, gun control groups said they'd made a dent. This week, they expect Judge Sotomayor to be confirmed to the Supreme Court despite the vocal opposition of the...

Mr. Pratt said some lawmakers who have had perfect ratings with the GOA will end up losing that distinction because of their Supreme Court vote. He said GOA is considering double-weighting the vote on Judge Sotomayor...

That story is a perfect example of why these RINOs make the GOP the stupid party. In the Sotomayor confirmation, these seven RINOs, will give seven rats the chance to maintain their NRA & GOA ratings. How stupid can they be? I hope Michael Steele talks to these fools to vote against her.

Yep, this will do it alright. They come for the guns, you know they are coming for you.

Dodomayor is a racist bigot who sees the Constitution as whatever she wants it to be.

And how does the crap weasel clunker Graham-nesty see things?

I've believed the GOP was the stupid party for quite some time now because it is so far left. But I never saw things from your perspective. Sadly, I do believe that the GOP really is this stupid that it will now allow for Democrats to purport to be "pro-gun."

He said GOA is considering double-weighting the vote on Judge Sotomayor...

The GOA and any other pro-gun advocacy group should rate any Senator that votes to confirm Judge Sotomayor as being completely anti-gun, or a 0 rating, regardless of their past votes on this subject.

When it comes to gun control, just how different will her opinion be from Souter, the guy she replaces?

Has there ever been anything on the Democrat Wish List that Souter didn’t already wish for himself?

There is little doubt left, in my view, that we are the last generation of Americans to enjoy rkba, privacy, the exercise of conscience, the freedom of worship, and many other meaningful American blessings. A couple more decades along the path and we won’t recognize this nation anymore.

While all this is true, it nets out at zero since R.B. Ginsberg would never support The Second anyway.

You're not getting it. Read Gun-Shy linked in comment# 1, if you didn't read it before. It describes how the rats behaved to defeat the Thune Amendment for reciprocity concealed carry privileges. Pryor from Arkansas and others were ready to change their vote if needed to defeat it. IIRC, Pryor voted against it originally, but he changed his vote to being in favor of it once Schumer knew that Pryor's vote was not needed to defeat it.

The rats moved to the right on the Second Amendment and abortion rights as needed starting in 2006 to retake the Congress. They are using good ratings from the NRA & GOA to keep control of Congress. If the rats want Sotomayor, they should have to pay for it at the polls. These idiot RINOs are giving the phony RKBA rats cover.

Maybe the NRA can endorse a few more Dems next time around.

If they can turn the dem party away from gun control, I’m all for it so yes, I hope they can honestly endorse more dems. So far there are something like sixty blue dog dems who are against gun control.

Not that I will ever vote for one as long as I live.

Sure they are.... You just keep telling yourself that.

What’s with the childish attitude? It was about sixty congressman who sent the letter to obama against gun control.

Where did I say I trusted them on other matters to vote for them?

Why don’t you go ahead and tell me exactly how many dems have C+ rating and above. It might help to get an exact count.

Souter was no better than Sotomayor on guns or much of anything else. No real change.
