WASHINGTON As President Obama turns 48 today, a few celebrations are on tap inside the White House, including a quiet breakfast with his family, lunch with Democratic senators in the State Dining Room, and dinner with his wife and a few friends.
The noisier commotion over his birthday is taking place outside the White House.
As most of the political conversation in Washington and across the nation has been devoted to health care, the economy and even the presidents first nomination to the Supreme Court, a small set of detractors have been obsessively fixated by this date in history: Aug. 4, 1961. That is the day, they argue, that proves that Mr. Obama should not be serving in office because he was not born in the United States.
Their theory, of course, is false. But that has not stopped cable television and talk radio hosts from dedicating countless hours to the topic.
So much discussion has taken place that the White House says it has stopped monitoring it and the Republican National Committee has distanced itself from the so-called birther movement, whose members insist that Mr. Obama was born in Kenya and not Hawaii. The fringe conspiracy theory that he is not constitutionally eligible to be president has taken on a life of its own and become a dreaded topic for some lawmakers.

Whenever excuses are made for hiding the truth questions will proliferate. 0bama created this situation by hiding all of his records and he continues to feed it by spending tons of money to keep them hidden. There is no one else to blame.
Let me try to explain something that a lot of people don’t seem to understand: millions and millions of Americans get their news from sources that take the NYTimes as gospel. Even if thousands of people posted comments here saying bad things about the NYT, that wouldn’t change.
If anyone wants to do something effective, you have to show how the NYT lied, and you have to show it to *others*, not just those here.
In the current case, the NYT is lying: HI’s governor never said he was born there. If we can get them to print a correction, that will also have an impact on a CNN report and on all the other reports that were based on that.
And, all that will help your cause, whatever it is.
Unfortunately, my attempt to get people to help doesn’t seem to have worked. If anyone is willing to do a tiny amount of work, please see this:
