BALTIMORE Baltimore police say a burglary suspect mistakenly declared dead by medics after he was shot by an officer lay on a convenience store floor for half an hour before anyone noticed he was still alive.
Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi (goo-lee-EL-mee) says 51-year-old Michael Quarles was shot early Saturday when he lunged at an officer with a long screwdriver. Guglielmi says the officer thought Quarles had a knife.
Guglielmi says emergency medical technicians pronounced Quarles dead at the scene, then left. But officers noticed about 30 minutes later that Quarles was moving and called the medics back to the scene.

30 minutes. Obama left newborn babies that survived abortion gasping for air hours longer than that.
Ooooops!
“I’m not dead yet”
I like the comment in the article about the officer mistaking the screwdriver for a knife. It’s almost as if the author is implying that the officer made a mistake in judgment for shooting someone who lunged at him with a long pointed object.
“I’m not dead yet” comes to mind.
Can you be charged for shooting someone who has already been pronounced dead? (That’s aside from the abuse of a corpse charge.) Just asking...
Tough call. Some thug gets shot for attacking a fellow police officer, and it turns out he's not dead ... it might take me a while to decide whether to call the EMTs back too.
Shoot him again!
At least it wasn't a banana.
Everyone who thinks that it matters whether it was a screwdriver or a knife should get a screwdriver to the heart, then be asked whether they've changed their opinion.
I thought EMS wasn’t supposed to declare death except in cases of obvious non-survivable injuries like decapitation, and for this very reason.
Baltimore by Nina Simone
Beat-up little seagull
On a marble stair
Tryin to find the ocean
Lookin everywhere
Hard times in the city
In a hard town by the sea
Aint nowhere to run to
There aint nothin here for free
Hooker on the corner
Waitin for a train
Drunk lyin on the sidewalk
Sleepin in the rain
And they hide their faces
And they hide their eyes
cause the citys dyin
And they dont know why
Oh, baltimore
Man, its hard just to live
Oh, baltimore
Man, its hard just to live, just to live
Get my sister sandy
And my little brother ray
Buy a big old wagon
Gonna haul us all away
Livin in the country
Where the mountains high
Never comin back here
til the day I die
Oh, baltimore
Man, its hard just to live
Oh, baltimore
Man, its hard just to live, just to live
“You’re not fooling anyone. You’ll be stone dead in a moment.”
I believe that Randy Newman composed “Baltimore”.
You are correct.
I have only heard the Nina Simone version however and think of her and her version when I think of Baltimore.
On the subject of Randy Newman all I can say is that “short people got no reason to live”. ;)
“I feel happyyyyyyy!”
Too bad they noticed. Would have saved the cost of the trial and jail time.
There’s a great scene in “I, Claudius” when Tiberius, on his death bed, names Caligula as the new Caesar. Caligula rushes out and informs the senators that Tiberius is dead and he is their new leader. A slaves rushes out and says “Tiberius is still alive!” Caligula gives one of the guards a significant glance. The guard goes back into the room and suffocates Tiberius with a pillow, then goes back to Caligula and gives him the high sign. Caligula tells the senators, “Now, Tiberius is REALLY dead.”
Too bad someone didn’t get a significant glance.
