I looked at the copyright list, and I should be able to post the title and link, but if I put the title of the "news"paper in here I can't post...so if I am doing something wrong, please delete the posting, or correct it if you can.
Please read this article about a graduate student from Pakistan who is completing his PhD dissertation in the hope of saving lives of victims of homicide bombers. It was on the front page of today's newspaper. It's not a very good newspaper, which is probably why they don't want their articles posted, but this one is an exception.

My husband was a Fulbright scholar. Most disorganized, unhelpful organization you can imagine.
Is the dissertation available online yet?
Thanks for fixing that.
I have enjoyed working with various Fulbright organisations, and found my experiences different than RIMTB...but I suppose there are disorganised and unhelpful people everywhere. What the Fulbright group that cares for Pakistan did here was take a boy who feared and distrusted the US, and gave him a chance to learn that we are not ogres - and allowed him to get an education that may save many lives. So, if RushIsMyTeddyBear found them to be disorganised, at least they may be helpful to those who will not die thanks to Mr. Usmani’s research.
For those who recall Senator Fulbright’s position on the Vietnam war and foreign aid in general, this is a fitting irony.
It’s owned by Gannett.
From the article, I can see why the US gov. was especially nosey about this one.
It looks a whole lot like a backhanded suggestion of what a suicide bomber ought to attack, given the choice.
I would hope some effort is put into means of detecting these menaces in a way that is itself undetectable.
I do understand our gov looking at the dissertation topic - hopefully so they can learn how to better protect us. What I don’t understand is how they found out about it? Are we to assume that the FBI scans all papers written by college students in the US? or only dissertations? How did they hear about it? I can’t help but think that there was a professor who did not like the fact that someone was looking into the subject. Although the article doesn’t mention it, most of Usmani’s travels involved presenting research papers at various conferences - I recall seeing his name here of FR before (I think it was around April or May) discussing some presentation at a mathematical modeling conference.
The question now becomes, was the informant angry that a Muslim was studying the effects of suicide bombs because the results would help make the bombs more effective, or because they would become less effective? Given the general political tenor of the academic community, I fear it was the latter. We have far too many professors who cheer the terrorists and oppose those who would defeat them.
