As congressional lawmakers return to their home districts for August recess, they could find a creature from Washington's silly season waiting for them: the "birthers." That's the nickname given to the odd activists who refuse to believe President Barack Obama qualifies as a "natural-born citizen."
The "birther" nickname is half-adapted from the 9/11 "truthers" who hounded the previous administration, blaming shadowy homegrown conspiracies for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
I have a different nickname for both groups: sore losers.
Obama's victory, like that of his predecessor, was too unexpected for some people to wrap their minds around, but we always have our imaginations - which in some cases have no limits.
Respect for facts did not help Rep. Mike Castle, R-Del., when a recent town hall meeting was disrupted by a woman who demanded to know why Congress was "ignoring" questions about Obama's birth certificate.
They're ignoring the "questions" because the questions have been put to rest in most stable people's minds. For example, Dr. Chiyome Fukino, director of Hawaii's State Department of Health, has reiterated her earlier declaration that she has seen the "original vital records" of Obama's Hawaii birth with her own eyes, contrary to the birthers' charges of a phony document. Hawaii newspapers also have printed photos of the 1961 announcement of Obama's birth. If there's a cover-up, this one has been running for decades.
But when Castle countered that Obama is, in fact, "a citizen of the United States," the crowd didn't like that. Some erupted in boos. Within days, the video went viral, and threw a chill down the spines of congressmen preparing to face other groups back in their own districts.(continued)

Did they all get an e-mail memo last week on how to go about refuting the "birthers" or what? These articles read so eerily similar it isn't funny.
When does the openness and transparency start?
Clarence doesn’t get it. That’s because he sold out a long time ago. He and Peggy Noonan probably laugh at each other’s jokes.
Clarence Page....he’s Skip Gates smart!
Clarence, you ignorant slut.
They certainly are circling the wagons and acting hysterical about something that should be a 'non-issue'. Just release the Birth Certificate a be done with it....
Clarene Thomas was ever a conservative?
Well, I have a nickname for him: MSM retard
How do you prove a negative? Is that even scientifically possible?
As an airplane reaches the sound barrier it goes through a patch of extreme turbulence.
That’s where the birther movement is right now.
Will it shudder and fly apart like so many of those early attempts at supersonic? Or will it break through and begin to travel at incredible speeds?
No way, no how. It is the Constitutitional responsibility of the President to prove he meets any and all Constitutional requirements for office, should there be any question. Those who challenge his credentials need prove nothing at all. That's what this whole issue is all about, when it comes down to it. Were it otherwise, those not qualified to be President could easily sidestep the issue by refusing to provide any necessary proof by either destroying the evidence, or hiding behind privacy laws to prevent it from being seen.
Failure to provide unimpeachable evidence that you meet the Constitutional requirements for office is grounds for impeachment.
Right. So you are a native born citizen of the United States unless it can be proven otherwise. Same logic applied to “undocumented workers”.
Clarene Thomas? Did you mean Clarence Thomas? Or Clarence Page (the guy who wrote the article)
Clarence has not looked at the one logical question of BO father and his school years in Indonesia. His father was British his mother was not of age to be a citizen by the laws on the books in 1961 and you can not have dual citizenship to go to school in Indonesia. I know that these are fairly simple concepts but I would guess they are above Clarence’s pay level.
I have a different nickname for both groups: sore losers.
Oh, really? Up till now, It has seemed to me that the state-run Flomax media has carried the water for "The Truthers".
Is this finally an acknowledgement that they are whacked out looney-tunes?
The difference is the birthers are denying something that EVERYBODY SAW WITH THEIR OWN EYES (sorry for the caps) whereas in the case of Barbaric Ubama's birth certificate, NOBODY HAS SEEN IT!!!
For the love of.....don't make me turn this car around!
I’ll make a deal with you Clarence — you get Obama to release his documents, and I will provide proof. At worst case, we just go away silently. What have you got to lose?
Whoops! Sorry, I meant Clarence Page, but I was thinking of Thomas the SCOTUS justice when I made the typo in the first name. FTR:
Thomas > Page
“Birthers” are truth seekers, who simply want Zero to provide a glimpse of his birth certificate. Never was a conspiracy so easily disproved — and that's what makes the “birthers” credible, IMHO.
I meant to say the TRUTHERS deny something happened that EVERYBODY SAW WITH THEIR OWN EYES. (sorry again for the caps).
So does Sarah get the “burden of proof” treatment in criminal and ethics proceedings where it actually should be applied? Don’t hold your breath.
Is that the way journalism works in this country now a days. Journalists depend on State employees' word rather than disclose the primary document itself? There is a file number on the COLB that corresponds to the actual birth certificate. Let's see the file itself and let us decide.
I can recall the feeding frenzy and phony documents related to Bush's air national guard records. The word of Bush's superiors didn't suffice then. Yet, we have the MSM trying to block the release of Obama's original birth certificate. The world has gone mad.
