Benn points out that Obama's repeated attacks on Holocaust denial resonate more strongly with US Jews than with Israelis and that the two Jewish populations have "different historical narratives."
Benn is onto something when he notes the differences between Israeli and American Jews. But he fails to grasp the real significance of what Obama is doing and what is actually happening in relations between the two communities.
It isn't that Obama is confusing the two groups. Through both his rhetoric and his actions, Obama is demonstrating his priorities and concerns.
Obama cares about securing the support of American Jews. He does not care about gaining the support of Israeli Jews. Moreover, Obama feels comfortable wooing the former while alienating the latter because he recognizes something that Benn has apparently missed: Today a large and growing chasm separates leftist US Jews from leftist Israeli Jews.

Ping. Did I forget anyone?
That pretty much sums it up.
American Jews have absolutely no concept of what it is like to be surrounded by large populations, cultures and spirits that have been taught that is good to despise you and want to erase your memory from off of the face of the earth.
Obama will exploit this blindness, because it helps him internationally.
I saddens me to say that many of my US co-religionists have adopted the Palestinian narrative vis-a-vis Israel. Years of 24/7 propaganda...
There was a tempest in a teapot in a local Girl Scout troop that meets at the local Conservative synagogue, and one of the mothers (a coworker) remarked to me about a mother who had apparently been difficult, "Well, after all, she's an Israeli." The hostility was obvious.
Whazzup?
The Jews are learning. Go to Z Street:

Not to mention the geometrically widening chasm between
US CONGRESSCRITTERS
and reality.
I’ve not seen that kind of hostility, but I would imagine it comes from internalizing the “nasty uncouth Zionists hurt the sweet and innocent Palestinians” narrative.
Well, that makes sense. They’ve been spoon fed that line for so long that their hackles are already up when they meet an Israeli, and any wrong move on that person’s part just reinforces the stereotype.
Leftist US Jews are “Woody Allen” Jews.
Woody Allen has made a career out of ridiculing any Jew who is religious, or takes it seriously.
Israeli Jews have a moment to moment seriousness to being Jewish in the form of potential rocket attacks, suicide bombers, kidnappings etc.
[sarcasm] Yeah, but American Jews have it much worse. They're surrounded by fat, drawling, Bible-thumping rednecks who love them but who keep telling them they better "git SAVED!!!" The horror! The unbelievable horror! It makes being exterminated by "palestinians" pale in comparison! [/sarcasm]
I can’t believe I forgot your name when compiling my “ping list” for this one! My apologies.
“American Jews have absolutely no concept of what it is like to be surrounded by large populations, cultures and spirits that have been taught that is good to despise you and want to erase your memory from off of the face of the earth.”
Having stayed in Crown Heights a couple of summers, I would opine that there are some exceptions.
High Volume.

For years I’ve said to liberals,
“Three hundred million Arab Muslims, five million Israeli Jews, do the math.”
Replies vary from obfuscation to claptrap. Then I add,
“When five million Arab Muslims are surrounded by three hundred million screaming Jews, then I’ll consider feeling sorry for the Arabs.”
Splutter, splutter, they reply, you’re grossly oversimplifying the issue.
Then I repeat, “Three hundred million Arab Muslims, etc”
Obama cares about securing the support of American Jews. He does not care about gaining the support of Israeli Jews. Moreover, Obama feels comfortable wooing the former while alienating the latter because he recognizes something that Benn has apparently missed: Today a large and growing chasm separates leftist US Jews from leftist Israeli Jews.
Those of us who have been to Israel and/or have close relatives there certainly do understand and empathize with our Israeli brethren.
