DETROIT -- The victim of an armed robbery shot and killed his robber Thursday morning, police said.
Police said an armed man attempted to rob a cab driver at the Citgo Gas Station on McNichols Street around 5 a.m.
The cab driver pulled out a gun and fired several rounds, striking the thief three times, said police.
The man was transported to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where he died.
Police said the 38-year-old shooter called police to report the shooting. He is now in custody and being questioned.
Police said the cab driver had a legitimate license to carry a concealed weapon.
It is unknown at this time whether or not the cab driver will face charges.

One down.
I wouldn’t characterize this cabbie as a “victim”.
Why is he in custody then? Is this SOP for Detroit PD?
McNichol @ 0500 is a scary propostion for anyone, regardless of occupation.
If EVERY cab driver in EVERY major city were not only allowed but required to carry, and a sign was put on and in the cab for the fare to see, my guess is the rate of robberies for this industry would plummet to near zero
So, the victim is in custody, is that correct?
They haven’t printed enough money yet to get me to drive a cab in that sewer.
I was so described, once, after I leveled a 12 gauge at a guy's head. The neighbor got a kick out of it.
I wonder where on McNichols (6 mile) this was? Van Dyke? Gratiot?
Police said the cab driver had a legitimate license to carry a concealed weapon.Y'think?
If you would like to be added or dropped from the Michigan ping list, please freepmail me.
Telegraph? I was wondering too, as I grew up close to McNichols.
I was thinking the same question.
My 85 year old Dad still lives at the same house he bought in 1959 near Van Dyke and Nevada.
Very close to were the Rapeist was fought off on Sherwood.
Don’t drive down there at night, unless he realy needs something.
Rouge Steel and Metro Airport? Heck, you were in the suburbs.
Hi neighbor. Grew up near 7 mile & Ryan. You probably recall the Ramona theater at 6 & Gratiot or Nortown theater on 7 near Gratiot.
We came up the Rouge on the ore carrier Charles Beeghly out of Two Harbors, MN.
Nortown was at 7 and Van Dyke, porn theater, before standing empty for years. Now a Coney Island is there.
Romana, did see a few movies there, before it became a parking lot.
Bel Air drive in, some good times there, don’t remember the movies however, LOL!!
Now the shopping center is 3/4 empty.
Also no K-Mart on Sherwood, no Farmer Jacks, and the Party Store has move across the street.
Maybe the should knock down the city and start fresh?
