Majorca closes airports after bombing in Magaluf

Police have closed all airport and seaports on Spain's Majorca island to prevent the "terrorists" responsible for a bombing which killed two civil guards from escaping, the government said.

Two civil guard officers were killed when their booby-trapped car exploded near a barracks on the island, local police said a day after a bomb in northern Spain injured dozens.

"Two civil guard officers who were in an official vehicle were killed in an explosion," a spokeswoman for the civil guards said.

"This means that departures from the port, airport and marinas in Majorca are closed for departures," the representative of Spain's central government said in a statement, adding the measure was being taken to "prevent the terrorists from fleeing".

Several people were also injured in the powerful explosion in the tourist area of the town of Calvia, which occurred at around 2pm (1400 GMT), said a spokeswoman for the regional government of the Balearic Islands.

Spanish media said the bombing bore the hallmarks of the armed Basque separatist group ETA which has traditionally targeted civil guards.

"We saw a big explosion, a column of smoke in front of the civil guard barracks," a man named Paco who witnessed the attack told public radio RNE.

The area where the blast occurred is near the Balearic Islands capital Palma de Majorca, a magnet for tourists.

Somebody should tell the Poms at the Telegraph that the correct spelling is "Mallorca." Even we here in the states can spell it correctly (even if some can't pronounce it correctly).

The ETA must be going after tourist and vacation travellers.

Policemen were the target, thats their MO.

It used to be they killed Spanish Police only in the Basque country, but they go anywhere now, so its harder to track them down.

I’ve heard BBC announcers pronounce San Juan as “San Jewan”.

That goes back to Byron’s poem, which is pronounced “Don Jewan.” The Poms don’t do romance languages justice, although they pronounce “oregano” a bit more correctly than Americans.
