We both know why they hate individual gun ownership—and they know also. It’s the last defense against their power-grabbing that prevents them from running their Utopian Dictatorship complete with trains to the gas chambers for all who don’t hold their ideology.
No use debating with your inlaw—her mind is made up and the truth will smack her in the face eventually. Next time she visits just break out your gun collection and re-oil them in front of her for added effect.

It’s funny, though, that she doesn’t have much opinion on guns per se. She asked me one time if I owned an “assault rifle”. I turned around and asked her to define what that meant to her. Her vague definition was that of a “machine gun”. I told her that almost no one owns one of those, and that she was being intentionally led to believe that that was what the debate was about.
She asked why? I said, they’re intentionally lying to you. Ask yourself why.
