The Obama administration is not ruling out the possibility of Russian membership in NATO.

Assistant Secretary of State Philip Gordon told U.S. lawmakers Tuesday that the United States would consider Russian membership in the military alliance that was founded to protect Europe from Soviet aggression.

Gordon said NATO should be open to European democracies. He added that "if Russia meets the criteria and can contribute to common security, and there is a consensus in the alliance, it shouldn't be excluded."

NATO is often vilified in Russia, which has objected to NATO's expansion to include Russia's neighbors.

But the Obama administration, seeking better relations, says it wants to convince Moscow that NATO is no longer a threat

Unbelievable! Must be great news to the prior soviet slave states in East Europe. The final surrender is in sight.

May as well fold-up NATO if Obama is considering admitting Russia. They already have the Council for European Security, or whatever they call it.

I guess Obama never read the NATO charter either...

Groucho was once asked, “may I join you?”

Groucho’s answer: “Why, am I coming apart?”

Lets ask Hugo Chavez to help us enforce the “Monroe Doctrine” while we are at it!

Or America could join a re-formed U.S.S.R.

Anything is possible under “The One”.

Wow, the former Soviet States who are anxious to join this alliance to become part of the group to protect them from Russia...possibly would make Russia part of the club?

Does Europe see how moronic Obama is yet?

NATO + Russia = United Nations II = useless organization

Obama must have agreed to dissolve NATO in exchange for the right to fly Afghanistan supply planes over Russian airspace

In another part of the universe, Joe Biden is carefully choosing his valuable take on these events...

“The reality is, the Russians are where they are because they have a shrinking population base, they have a withering economy, they have a banking sector and structure that is not likely to be able to withstand the next 15 years, they’re in a situation where the world is changing before them and they’re clinging to something in the past that is not sustainable.”

The State Dept has always been a nest of Communists. Look at the Hiss case, the McCarthy hearings, etc. Many very high level people at State were fellow travelers or even actual CP members.

And then I suppose Hussein will vote to throw the US OUT of NATO, right? Incredible, but not really surprising.

What I really don’t like about this is a host of issues. Ok, Russia joins NATO...let’s say Chechnya flares up again, or Georgia? Could Russia invoke Article V? If it does, then we’re obligated to send troops to help the aggressor, something the framers of NATO never intended.

Not to mention, if Russia and China ever go at it over Siberia (yeah, Tom Clancy wrote about it) but the fact is, it could happen, and to be honest, it’s more likely than us and China going at it, can Russia scream Article V over that and thus, kick off WWIII?

Russia in NATO would be a mistake. It would kick off a “Guns of August” scenario. Not to mention, it would give Russia a veto over the defense of the Western world, vis a vis, say, Iran.

check out the 1960’s cult flick “The President’s Analyst” starring James Coburn. Severn Darden plays a Soviet agent, and has a very appropriate line.

“Every day, and in every way, my country becomes a little more capitalistic, your country becomes a little more socialistic. Sooner or later we meet in the middle and join hands”.

For the Poles, it is deja vu all over again or 1939 redux, if you will.

No hes not! It only makes sense. Add it up! It all makes sense, Particularly when you have a muslim leader! Why do you think Islam was soo happy with him coming to power? Add it up. Acceptance of Iran...give Iranians the bomb. Align your self with the old enemies of America...he bows to a Saidi king. Give the terrorists 200 million. Destroy all of americas old allegiances. Squeeze the CIA and the military. Bankrupt America....
