Lily Burk and Charles Samuel walked in separate worlds. Burk was a bright, bookish 17-year-old, whose future was ahead of her. After a summer in which she was to appear on stage as the lead in a play and volunteer at a skid row needle exchange program, she was to have started her final year of high school. Samuel, 50, had been in and out of prisons for decades. He was a transient with a long record of criminal activities and drug abuse. Friday, on a hot, bright afternoon, chance brought the two together on a quiet, tree-lined street.

Makes one wonder why God allows these things to happen.
God, give me 5 minutes alone with this piece of s#it!! It’d be worth prison time.
Militant
I feel bad for the family, but have to say that lib parents were the likely cause of this girl’s encounter with the dark side of LA’s skid row.
I would not want my 17 year old daughter working as a volunteer in a skid row needle exchange program.
God gives man free choice and man makes them happen. Can’t blame God.
It took three idiots to write this? No wonder newspapers are going under.
There comes a point where you just have to decide to throw away the key. The State has an obligation to protect the safety of the law-abiding general populace.
Makes me wonder why people want to blame God when it's our own free will that does these things. Or more appropriately, why is it always God's fault when people choose to do things directly contrary to what He's commanded?
You’re right, this is not a tale of two cities. It is a brutal murder of a naive young woman by a deranged ruthless man.
This is a clear cut example why the Death Penalty is justified.
She’d just gone downtown to pick up something at the office for her sister or some family member, IIRC. She wasn’t even at the “needle exchange program” at that moment, although it’s possible that she was a little too trusting because of her other activities. What a horrible thing.
“The State has an obligation to protect the safety of the law-abiding general populace.”
An obligation that has been abandoned to accomodate the ridiculous liberal left attitude of “no fault of their own” mentality for everyone.
Wasn’t the Three Strikes Law supposed to prevent things like these?
God doesn't allow these things to happen. We do.
We have free will.
“There comes a point where you just have to decide to throw away the key”
yes
I agree. This article is grossly offensive. It makes it sound as though this were just, well, one of those things, an experience of “diversity”...and, well, the girl, it’s just too bad about her.
It’s the fault of a justice system that has let people like this crack smoking multiple-offender infest our cities and regard the rest of us as prey.
“volunteer at a skid row needle exchange program”
I truly sympathize with that poor girl and her parents. Please, teach your kids that there are bad people out there and to be careful. And for heaven’s sake, don’t ever let your daughter volunteer at a skid row needle exchange.
For some reason the Times won’t print a picture of the guy.
From the article...”Police declined to release a photo of Samuel, citing concerns it could taint interviews with possible witnesses.”
Let me guess..
Murdered woman's final hours a mystery
"......Brydum was a community activist and organizer, a free spirit on an adventure across the country. Money meant little to her; life was about experiences....."The timeline stops at 1:30 a.m.," Defillo said. That's when Brydum hopped on a bicycle and left the bar.......She was found seven hours later, fully clothed. She had not been sexually assaulted, police said. Robbery doesn't appear to be the motive, but her bicycle is missing......"
I would have to agree with you.
