House narrowly passes major energy-climate bill

WASHINGTON – In a triumph for President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House narrowly passed sweeping legislation Friday that calls for the nation's first limits on pollution linked to global warming and aims to usher in a new era of cleaner, yet more costly energy.

The vote was 219-212, capping months of negotiations and days of intense bargaining among Democrats. Republicans were overwhelmingly against the measure, arguing it would destroy jobs in the midst of a recession while burdening consumers with a new tax in the form of higher energy costs.

The House's action fulfilled Speaker Nancy Pelosi's vow to clear major energy legislation before July 4, and sent the measure to a highly uncertain fate in the Senate.

Obama lobbied recalcitrant Democrats by phone from the White House as the debate unfolded across several hours, and Al Gore posted a statement on his Web site saying the measure represents "an essential first step towards solving the climate crisis." The former vice president won a Nobel Peace Prize for his work drawing attention to the destructive potential of global warming.

On the House floor, Democrats hailed the legislation as historic, while Republicans said it would damage the economy without solving the nation's energy woes.

(snip) "It sets a new course for our country, one that steers us away from foreign oil and towards a path of clean American energy."

But Rep. John Boehner, the House Republican leader, used an extraordinary one-hour speech shortly before the final vote to warn of unintended consequences in what he said was a "defining bill." He called it a "bureaucratic nightmare" that would cost jobs, depress real estate prices and put the government into parts of the economy where it now has no role.

ANOTHER ATROCITY being readied for the confiscatory taxation policies of this radical administration. More lies, more deceit, more taxes -- these charlatans could care less about CO2 (which we need to live, by the way) and it is all about TAXATION OF THE PEOPLE FOR CONTROL AND POWER. This is not good for the Dems though -- their fanatic push to ram through ultra-damaging legislation -- so-called stimulus, so-called health care, so-called Cap and Trade....is going to hurt many VOTERS. I frankly do not think they have even considered the consequences of such confiscatory taxation and debt upon their political futures. They certainly and obviously do not care about the impact on the country, it economy and its people. (understatement) -- this bill is so loaded with traps and more routes to MORE TAXATION and impact on the economy than one can imagine.

That means it’s been sent to the Senate who has done nothing in a month, good, right?

Amid being beat up about “old news” — it really is not in the sense it is still looming over our heads. I would agree that the “Health Care” Marxist power-grab (more appropriately named) is far more important to the fanatic Dims. Given it really is not about “health” OR “carbon”, in either case, I just hope the people and the Blue Dogs see the ramifications of these scams, both of them, and what it means to them politically as well as to their country (the latter not mattering very much).

I hope you're right about it being DOA in the Senate.

We won't be safe until this thing is completely killed, incinerated, and buried.

Once that is done, we need to actively go after every person who voted for it and make sure that their political careers are destroyed.
