Iraq Plans to Send 10,000 Students to Colleges in U.S., Abroad
July 25, 2009
WASHINGTON Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki says his country plans to send up to 10,000 Iraqi students a year to colleges in the United States, Britain, Canada and Australia over the next five years as a part of a new scholarship program.
Al-Maliki says stability in Iraq has allowed the country to focus on education after years of war.
He says there's great ambition behind the new program "because our needs are great."
The Iraqi government is funding the scholarship program. It will allow students to earn bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees.
The country plans to start with about 500 students in U.S. and British schools this fall.

Common sense tells me that in order for Iraq to become a functioning non-hostile state, they need a well educated youth. We expect from them to become a western-oriented democracy, yet deny them the means to stand on their feet?Ding ding ding. For the most part, motivated students don't have *time* to be political. They're too busy improving themselves.Doesnt make sense to me. And regarding anti-Americanism... I dont think that Iraqi students can be any worse than our American campus commies.
In the past the immigrants all shared a common Judeo-Christian heritage and we had a melting pot in which e pluribus unum was workable. No more. Today we have ghetto enclaves of minorities in Redmond, Freemont, San Jose, Arcadia and the list goes on. This is tailor-made for the Democratic Party that gets it support from racial and tribal groups.
Academic specialties that promote an anti American outlook are already alive and well in Iraq. They have a history of Communism and their govt was closely tied to the Nazis. The Baathists can claim a direct lineage to them. If they want a religious education Madrassas are readily available. They won’t need to come here for an anti American education. They can get that easily enough at home. Concerns about using this program as an entry point for terrorists is legitimate. You’ll just have to rely on your Government to fully vet these students.
Oh that’s right. The secondary and post secondary.......that’s where they have actual sex demonstration classes and really teach good critical thinking in the form of hating the USA. thanks for the correction because I’m just so confused on the state of education today. I mean I should just look around and see the fine products that are coming out of those institutions.

The same retread nativist hooey gets throw out with each wave of immigration and it's just as false each time around. People forget the KKK hated the italians and the irish(evil papists who didn't share our judeo-protestant ethics) and lynched them as well.
Before that it was the germans, etc...
I dont think that Iraqi students can be any worse than our American campus commies.
So let’s put them in with them to cultivate even more hatred and back up what they’ve learned already. You said a mouth full right there......
Such negativity. I think it’s a good idea. For Iraqis that is. They need people to get experience in a western Democracy... while they can.

I mean I should just look around and see the fine products that are coming out of those institutions.Secondary education has always been a prison(the factory model of education) meant to keep kid's hormones from making them unproductive members of society. Back in the day, schools could subject the young prisoners... I mean students to stricter discipline(which they also got at home). Now that we're rich and dissolute nobody's willing to make that commitment anymore.
The article clearly states that the Iraqi government is funding this program.
Most of the Iraqis I know want degrees in engineering or medicine.
A lot of them have these degrees but got them during the Saddam era and they don't equate with the degrees they could get elsewhere.
They want to restore their country to its former days when Baghdad was known as the education center of the east, but they have a lot of other things that need to be fixed first.
These kids lived through hell on earth and now they’re going to be punished by putting them into America’s socialist schools? Shameful
Re: some of the comments on this thread. We overthrow their brutal dictator, point them in the right direction toward democracy, help them fight off threats to that democracy. Then when they show signs of standing on their own two feet and wanting to join the civilized family of nations, we b*tch about that too. Only on FR.
Ehh...no, thanks.
The coalition just got rid of most of the terrorists here.
We don't need a new breed of scum to follow.
We have a bad record when it comes to influencing foreign students favorably. Instead, they end up being brainwashed at our universities by left-wing faculty.
Many foreign students comes here, and are aghast at the low morals of American youth, and their general laziness. They go home with a poorer view of Americans than before.
Remember that Kwame Nkrumah went to college here.
I honestly believe there are people who think we are still at war against Iraq. It boggles the mind.
Iraq is an ally now.
Well, Virginia just closed a good portion of the Highway Rest Areas but were (are) able to shift some of the blame to the Fed because private enterprise can’t operate businesses or rest areas on Interstates.
But we can locate former (and future) enemies and students here on our dime.....
Something terribly wrong with this scenario...
From the article, right up at the top of this page:
"The Iraqi government is funding the scholarship program."
Their former regime was our enemy. They are no longer in power.
As for the future, I can't predict it. But I suspect you can't either.
I’m all for this. Education and exposure to a western democracy is never a bad thing! Very good idea!!

This is also in the article.
