Iraq Plans to Send 10,000 Students to Colleges in U.S., Abroad
July 25, 2009
WASHINGTON Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki says his country plans to send up to 10,000 Iraqi students a year to colleges in the United States, Britain, Canada and Australia over the next five years as a part of a new scholarship program.
Al-Maliki says stability in Iraq has allowed the country to focus on education after years of war.
He says there's great ambition behind the new program "because our needs are great."
The Iraqi government is funding the scholarship program. It will allow students to earn bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees.
The country plans to start with about 500 students in U.S. and British schools this fall.

Please, please... if the degrees are to be in marshmallow subjects (such as the idiot Gates tries to teach at Harvard), send them somewhere else than the US.
There is no need to support the weeds currently infesting our universities. Let’s let most of the idiot course departments die quietly.
And - a sincere note of apology to the many, many talented and accomplished English majors, etc., out there. You know you’re good, and I know you’re contributing much to the country.
However, it appears that Harvard, Yale, Colorado University, etc. don’t know who you are, and choose to hire the losers.
Then they will get degrees and open more liquor and deli stores....and never leave..
I'd be more worried about the 10,000 Saudi students.
Vet them properly... and since the Iraqi Government is paying, they should be welcome. Education is a fine way of raising a new generation for Iraq.
The only downside I see is that they will be made more Anti-American by visiting liberal-dominated campuses.
I remember the case of a Kuwaiti student in California, who wrote a very pro-American essay... and was bashed viciously by his liberal prof.
Now is the time that we need the crusades, and 52% of our fellow countryman elected Suleiman the (not so)Magnificent.
Hey great!!!! Besides the free education (which we pay) let’s throw in free healthcare, let them bring their entire families, put them at the head of the line for jobs, give them all union benefits and we can throw in welfare for those that can’t or won’t work, give them citizenship so they can vote for the DemocRATS. Great country here in Obama-land.
Or maybe they’re coming here to study Engineering and Geology and Mathematics? No need to assume the worst. After all, where else would they go to get the knowledge to run their country, seein’s how we liberated them and all?
Don’t try to use reason... some are too occupied with their hysteria.
I have a better idea: Let’s send the Ward Churchills, Gates etc. types OVER THERE to teach (one way tickets of course)
I know what you mean. Sometimes I just have to shake my head.
Agree totally. I just want to keep them out of academic “disciplines” which are nothing of the sort.
Not hysteria.......just common sense.
I think this is a good idea... take for instance Saudi Arabia... most of the college graduates are men... and they all majored in religious studies (guess which one?).
It is so bad that Saudi Arabia has to import specialists to do the work... doctors... engineers... and so on... (I got this from National Geographic several years ago... so I can't provide the link).
yeah ok.......considering our schools are teaching more about how to correctly apply condoms instead of math, science etc. What a wonderful tribute to American AcademiaYou're confusing secondary with post-secondary education. Secondary American education is a basket-case. Post secondary, not so much, but no better than good universities in the rest of the world(outside of MIT and Harvard). Graduate programs are still #1 in the world.
Common sense tells me that in order for Iraq to become a functioning non-hostile state, they need a well educated youth. We expect from them to become a western-oriented democracy, yet deny them the means to stand on their feet?
Doesn’t make sense to me. And regarding anti-Americanism... I don’t think that Iraqi students can be any worse than our American campus commies.
I dont think this necessarily a bad thing. My concern would be that Al Qaeda interlopers would be part of the mix.

Great country here in Obama-land.Here's a dirty little secret about America. Everybody here is an immigrant, it's just a matter of *when* your came. Moreover, the majority of entrepreneurship is done by recent, well-educated (legal) immigrants with strong work ethics. The minute America stops allowing motivated immigrants is the minute it collapses in on itself.
