Excellent post I’m going to keep it it and reread it.
>”Now, what about the young people? This, again, is bad analysis. Young people have, historically, been liberal. Yet, they do not stay that way. If they had, then Reagan should have been impossible due to all the hippies.”<
One thing related to this, for the people that don’t know about the period, is that the 18 to 29 vote in 1972 when the draft and the Vietam war were taking place went 52% Nixon to 46% McGovern.
I did. That's hilarious. You got that too? What was that supposed to be? Some sort of filter to weed out the tin-foil brigade? Or perhaps they were just "floating a concept" to see if they've sufficiently prepared the pig for roasting.
Your Sarah Palin comments are interesting. To me it seems like a big mistake on their part. The more they attack her personally the more sympathy she gets from the moderate democrats. I can see it in my wife who voted for “The Chosen One”.
The Nancy Pelosi / Harry Reid types almost seem like they are doing their best for a Republican comeback. Hell these Blue Dogs sound like Republicans. I'd focus on working with them.
Between “Government Run Healthcare” and his stupid police comment Obama may have really met his Waterloo. Republicans shouldn't back down. We'll have to see.
I'm a big Sarah Palin fan. I feel she could shock the world unless the Republican party establishment destroy her. I'll be watching. If they do I'll vote third party. I'll still support the House Republicans though.
I live in Connecticut so I'm stuck in a blue state even though the area where I live is a working class Republican small city. There were many more McCain/Palin signs here than those other guys.
Enough rambling from me for now.
HUH??????
Blacks are the most Christian group out of all races and very few are Catholics. So you are way off
“Time for a new party anyway.”
Amen! If we must have a two-party system, then it’s time to dump this one. The Republicans sure don’t look like they want my vote, nor that of many other conservatives. It would be a great relief if they would just cease to exist.
Hooray, Zogby!
You skipped post 90
"Start a Protestant revival movement, with the exception of blacks, protestantism means conservative minorities."
I think it would actually be an improvement. A THREE party system would serve our country better. I think our forefathers saw a two party system as a balance - but what has happened now is that the two parties have figured out that they can let each party take turns in power & they all get to stay in office for life.
Three parties would make it harder for that to happen.
I'm not sure who "us" is. There are many conservatives of my generation on this forum - end of the Baby-Boom-ers who are 50ish and whose political mind was shaped during the Regan Revolution. Far from being in the minority, conservatives can and do succeed.
When I was 18, Gerald Ford was POTUS (VP who became president at Nixon's resignation). Jimmy Carter was elected president the next year, and I grumbled along with everyone else, but Ronald Regan had arrived. His campaign was noteworthy in 1976 and the ascendancy of Conservatism began. Ronald Regan ran his revolutionary campaign in 1979. I was 22 and he captured my imagination, and inspired a new generation of conservatives. I registered Republican and voted for the first time in 1980.
Regan began a revolution in American politics and economics that included:
Much more can be said.
So like others in this thread and on this forum I say, "Conservatism has worked every time it has been tried."
Don't give in to the gloom-and-doomers, Conservatism is not dead. Conservatism does not need the Republican party to survive. To the contrary, the Republican party needs Conservatism to survive.
I hope this isn't viewed as a rant. There are many FR members, and I am not sure that the majority of FReepers "have been in the political minority all their lives". Regardless, we have good cause continue to be enthusiastic about the prospect for the success of the American experiment in the future. Keep your chin up.
I agree with you.
>> Conservatism works every time its tried. <<
No, it doesn’t always “work.” All by itself, conservatism is poorly placed to win the allegiance of today’s poorly educated, Oprah-addicted electorate.
Therefore I submit that before conservatism can “work,” it needs persuasive and attractive leaders who (a) thouroughly understand the underlying principles, (b) believe sincerely in them, and (c) can explain them in clear language that will appeal both to the blue collar worker and to the suburban soccer mom.
And it’s exactly that kind of leadership that the GOP now lacks.
Thanks for the nice words...
Posts like yours are the reason I’m glad to be a here.
GOP should die....where’s the news in that?
I'm not allowed to say in public (damn SS)....
The last poll I saw was that the majority of Americans are Conservative. It is WE who are on the right track....RINOS days are numbered.
Their whole existence is to keep people IN poverty. It is very very cruel.
Zogby is a leftist Dem in diguise under his so called polling firm. I bet he even brought out the “special Zogby sauce” on Obama’s approval being at 48%. I bet he didn’t even poll on this one and just piggbacked on Rasmussen.
