Barack Obama is facing the anger of liberal Massachusetts today after being engulfed in a race row over the arrest of a black Harvard scholar.
Mr Obama is facing criticism after saying that white police officers had acted 'stupidly' in arresting Henry Louis Gates, a prominent black Harvard University scholar, who was locked outside his own home.
Police chiefs accused him of alienated officers across the country with his statement.
But last night Mr Obama stood by his remarks, saying cooler heads should have prevailed.
Commentators said the president had crossed a line by passing judgement without all the facts, and police in Massachusetts were said to be 'deflated' by his comments.
Sergeant James Crowley, who arrested Gates at his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, said he was disappointed in the president.
'I support the president to a point, yes, I think it's disappointing that he waded into what should be a local issue and something that plays out here,' he said.
'As he himself said ... he doesn't know all the facts.'
'The President has alienated public safety officers across the country by his comments,' said David Holway, president of the International Brotherhood of Police Officers, which represents 15,000 public security officials.
In a letter to Mr Obama, he sought an apology. 'You not only used poor judgement in your choice of words, you indicted all members of the Cambridge police department and public safety officers across the country.'
But Mr Obama stood by his views last night, telling ABC News he was 'surprised' by the controversy surrounding his remark.

If Barack Obama and his family decide to summer in Oak Bluffs, as the Boston Globe reports they are considering, they would enjoy not just pristine beaches, but a social scene that includes some of the nation’s most successful black artists, thinkers and entrepreneurs.
Obama’s longtime mentor, Harvard law professor Charles Ogletree, has a home in Oak Bluffs. So, too, do Washington power broker Vernon Jordan (the great uncle of Obama friend and adviser Valerie Jarrett), filmmaker Spike Lee and former HHS Secretary Dr. Louis Sullivan.

Asking to be arrested and HOPING the officer would, in some way, become physical with him
Obama stupidly opened his mouth before he had a clue about the issues surrounding this arrest. Unfortunately for Americans, ZerO seems to have a habit of forming opinions and policy without understanding the facts.
Obama was right. How dare a white officer arrest a black man? He should have known that you just don’t do that in Obamaworld.

I firmly agree with that.
I will add, however, that it does not have limits. I read the police report. This guy crossed them, by a wide margin.
A certain president needs to show us his birth certificate and things will go away for him. This guy needed to show his ID for the same reason. But wait, there’s more. He didn’t just refuse. His beligerence was completely over the top. Way over.
He didn’t just “argue”.

Obama totally exposed himself the other night, and revealed exactly who he is.
This guy is really going to regret ever having that news conference.
