WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama is set to announce on Friday a competition for $4 billion in federal grants to improve academic achievement in U.S. schools, the Washington Post reported on Thursday.
Obama wants states to use funds from the competition, dubbed the "Race to the Top," to ease limits on so-called charter schools, link teacher pay to student achievement and move toward common U.S. academic standards, the Post said.
Charter schools receive public funding but generally are exempt from some state or local rules and regulations. They are operated as an alternative to traditional public schools.

First the Obozo insults doctors, then cops, then white people (we’re all racist, you know), and now teachers. Great work for the pinheaded moron.
Race, Race, Race. It's always about Race with this guy. When will it ever stop?
We are being slammed with major changes, some major crisis- with billion and trillion dollar spending sprees almost daily from Obama.
America is so confused they don’t know where to turn.
Clearly Alinsky, Clower-Piven at work here.
Please keep him away from the education system. He is the last person I want anywhere near education.
I don't really get this. Is he making charter schools more accessible and insist that educators produce results or what? That would be a good thing.
However, knowing the marxist that he is, I can't believe he would minimize the National Teachers Association (NEA). Still, what's his thinking here? What's the reverse game plan for a socialist?
What group, based on: race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, income, geographic location, career, education level, etc. can obama insult and belittle next? In obama's case, stupid really is as stupid does.
As my Dad would say, "obama is the north end of a south-bound horse."
Have you noticed that's a common theme with obama and his cohorts in crime? Everything is a rush, a panic, a crisis. "Let me be clear. We must act now." Sounds like a used car salesman (with apologies to used car salesmen everywhere), you know the type, the kind that give used car salesmen a bad name. Don't think, don't wait, this deal/opportunity/crisis won't last. Act now!

Well, no. I think Congress, and the American public, should demand more thoughtful, considered, well-planned and reasoned action from our representatives. It is our money and our liberties and freedom they are squandering. To start with, anyone and everyone who has voted to pass the recent bills that were passed before they were even finished should be recalled and thrown out of office. That is pure criminal negligence and shows complete contempt for their responsibilities.
He, obama, is rapidly becoming the last person I want anywhere near my Country, period. I'd gladly empty Gitmo into the Federal prison system if we could put obama in Gitmo. When it comes out that obama is in fact illegal and ineligible, he will find his backside in a Federal penitentiary. That is my hope, prayer, and desire.
All the more reason to believe he IS a racist.
Looks like his next planned hold-up of American workers is to pour more of our money into the black hole of public education. The truth is, no amount of dollars dumped into this system will solve its problems. Those involved in the education field, including government, choose to close their minds and eyes to the real reasons why so many students are not learning.
While I can certainly name some of them, I invite others to state their thoughts on this.
RACE to the top!
As long as the students and teachers are not Whitey, Bambi approves!
And he thought we wouldn’t catch on to that clever little program name...
When has throwing money at the education problem ever solved anything?
Only 4 billion? Sounds niggardly.
Typical from a Left wing loon, throw more Money at something hoping for different results ,More Money down a rat hole
I’d bet the farm this money will ALL go to failed inner city black and latin filled schools.
Yes. Thank you.
