Calif. man pulls girl from burning SUV on freeway
The Associated Press Jul. 23, 2009
LOS ANGELES -- The California Highway Patrol is calling a Southern California man a hero for rescuing a 3-year-old girl from a burning vehicle on a Los Angeles-area freeway.
John McDonald of West Covina was driving on Interstate 10 in El Monte Wednesday when he saw an overturned sports utility vehicle engulfed in flames.
Video footage shows him running to help as three people who escaped the burning SUV ran away. The CHP says the driver of the SUV shouted that her granddaughter was still inside, and McDonald went in to pull the girl out.
Both were treated for minor injuries.
McDonald told KABC-TV he jumped into action because he felt it was "something that needed to be done."
The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Heros happen. God bless hero’s.
That does not compute.
The article stated there was video footage of the rescue. Does anyone know where I can find it??
Sounds like an overloaded SUV with illegal aliens speeding?
The AMERICAN guy who rescued the people is a hero.
I salute this brave man.
There are angels among us. Everyday people can do this kind of thing. And do.
Doesn’t appear in a Google search yet.
Wow, that’s scary. God bless this hero.
What the hell was the matter with the child’s grandfather, that he ran away and left his grandchild in a burning vehicle? If this were my child, her grandfather would never have her again. But of course, the occasion would never arise: my father, a splendid man who displayed his heroism many times, would never have done such a heinous thing.
I spit on the grandfather of this baby.
The occupants of the SVU who were running away when this hero brushed past them to rescue their child reminds me of the drunken father in Texas who ran into a creek and swam out of the car leaving his six or seven children to drown like rats.
The driver was a HER. However, I do wonder why she or one of the other two survivors did not try to rescue the grandaughter, IF THEY WERE ABLE TO LEAVE THE BURNING VEHICLE.
The occupants of the SVU who were running away when this hero brushed past them to rescue their child reminds me of the drunken SENATOR in MASS who ran into a creek and swam out of the car leaving his girlfriend to drown like a rat. (Couldn't resist that.)
Chicken shits ran away leaving their little girl to burn alive while some stranger with a nutsack did what needed to be done. It makes sense to me. It is just hard to believe so many of our peers have so little courage.
Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point. ~C.S. Lewis
Grandfather or grandmother, this is unforgivable.
Q: What do you have if you put 50 government Small Business Administration personnel in a room with 50 lesbians?
A: A room full of people who don't do dick!
My wife & I would die trying to save our granddaughter in any dangerous situation.
This is uncombrehenable to me. My SIL was carrying her granddaughter at home and tripped on a rug. She twisted and landed on her back/side to protect the baby - breaking her arm. This reaction is hard-wired into almost everyone. Was this a step-child thing?
