SAN FRANCISCO John "Marmaduke" Dawson, a longtime Grateful Dead collaborator who co-wrote "Friend of the Devil" and developed a devoted following with his psychedelic country group New Riders of the Purple Sage, has died. He was 64.
Dawson died Tuesday from stomach cancer in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where he had retired several years ago

OK...what an excellent response... There was so much transitional music in the late 60’s-70’s. And so many bands changing members that it’s hard when u hear a song to tell who was playing with who.
I would have called NRPS Alternative Country...yeah, like Flying Burritos, Gram Parsons & EmmyLou Harris, etc.

Aw, come on! Okay, it was funny, but I’m almost in tears thinking this guy has had it.
I’ve been lurking on this board since 2004 and only recently decided to post. You guys have given me much courage. I’m of the belief that we are in a real fight for our very lives. It breaks my heart to see someone get discouraged. Please soldier on. And remain funny!

Oh darn...Once upon a time I worked at Rancho Nicasio and got to experience many nights of these guys, Clover (Huey Lewis), Asleep at the Wheel...great times those were.

Yep, he “robbed” my head a few times...;^)
And yes, she was drop dead killer gorgeous! Not that I was fit to even be in the same hallway, but I got to see her a lot floating around at class change.
She still has a beautiful voice, but has filled out a bit, as have most of us.
BTW, absolutely loved her in Pirate of Penzance.
