Cop who arrested black scholar is profiling expert

The white police sergeant criticized by President Barack Obama for arresting black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. in his Massachusetts home is a police academy expert on racial profiling.

Cambridge Sgt. James Crowley has taught a class on racial profiling for five years at the Lowell Police Academy after being hand-picked for the job by former police Commissioner Ronny Watson, who is black, said Academy Director Thomas Fleming.

"I have nothing but the highest respect for him as a police officer. He is very professional and he is a good role model for the young recruits in the police academy," Fleming told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The course, called "Racial Profiling," teaches about different cultures that officers could encounter in their community "and how you don't want to single people out because of their ethnic background or the culture they come from," Fleming said.

Obama has said the Cambridge officers "acted stupidly" in arresting Gates last week when they responded to his house after a woman reported a suspected break-in.

Crowley, 42, has maintained he did nothing wrong and has refused to apologize, as Gates has demanded.

Crowley responded to Gates' home near Harvard University last week to investigate a report of a burglary and demanded Gates show him identification. Police say Gates at first refused, flew into a rage and accused the officer of racism.

Gates was charged with disorderly conduct. The charge was dropped Tuesday.

Hannity read the police report. At the end of the report, Gates stated that the front door could not be locked because of a previous break-in to a police officer who wanted to secure it before they left to book Gates.

Whoa, wait a minute, didn't Gates say he was away on vacation overseas? Why on earth would he take off on vacation and leave his home unsecured?

I’ve mentioned this in a couple threads because the Cambridge police report mentions (1) an offer to call Harvard maintenance about the broken door and (2) a radio call to summon Harvard security.

There would be no reason to do those things if it wasn’t a Harvard property.

I only mention it because calling it “Gates’ home” rather than “Gates’ apartment” puts a slightly different spin on things.

Right, I came home early from a business trip (it was late in the evening) after I previously had alerted the local Sheriff's Dept. of my planned dates of absence. I awoke the next morning to deputies surrounding my house to investigate someone moving around inside. When I established my identity, the deputies departed...with my thanks for doing their job and a pledge that, in the future, I would alert the station in advance if I am planning to return early.

Yes! I want my local police force making inquiries into suspicious activity. My white friend is a lawyer and they asked him why he was simply on his own property. He simply and peacefully responded that he was the owner and that was the end of that.

Professor Gates possesses that usual “chip on the shoulder” attitude. The police were simply doing their job. He could have simply said “he owns the place- here is my ID.”
