A Cambridge, Massachusetts, police officer said Thursday he will "never apologize" about how he handled the arrest of prominent black Harvard University professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. Sgt. Jim Crowley said he has nothing to apologize for in regards to the arrest of Henry Louis Gates Jr.
"That apology will never come from me as Jim Crowley, it won't come from me as sergeant in the Cambridge Police Department," Sgt. James Crowley told Boston radio station WEEI. "Whatever anybody else chooses to do in the name of the city of Cambridge or the Cambridge Police Department which are beyond my control, I don't worry about that. I know what I did was right. I have nothing to apologize for."
Crowley also said he was exercising caution and is clearly not a racist based on his previous actions.
Those actions, Crowley told the Boston Herald, include giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to former Boston Celtics star Reggie Lewis, who suffered a fatal heart attack in 1993 at Brandeis University when Crowley was a campus cop.
"I wasn't working on Reggie Lewis the basketball star. I wasn't working on a black man," Crowley told the Boston Herald. "I was working on another human being."
Gates was arrested last week at his home after a confrontation with Crowley. Cambridge authorities on Tuesday dropped disorderly conduct charges against Gates.
Crowley also told WEEI that when he asked Gates to come out of his home, he thought a break-in had occurred or was still happening.
"I didn't know who [Gates] was. I was by myself. I was the only police officer standing there, and I got a report of people breaking into a house," Crowley told WEEI.

Good for him. Zero should be the one apologizing.
Why do I have an ill feeling that this incident is going to be blown up beyond proportion by the Al Sharptons and Jesse Jacksons of this world ?
Aided by Obama’s recent rhetoric, this small incident will be made into a national issue pretty soon.

A good cop. I guess they do exist.
The police offers HAS NO REASON to apologize. Mr. Gates should have shown his I.D. when requested, even though he felt put out because it was his residence. The police officer probably would have apologized then, right in front of Gate’s house and he would not have been taken into custody. It is not a race issue like people are trying to make it. It is an issue of common sense. If it would have been me, stopped for breaking into my own home, I would not have hesitated to show I.D.
They can say whatever they want to say, but the written record and all the eye witnesses will make sure that the truth stays front and center. In this case, this Gates revealed himself to be 100% ass, never mind the color of his skin.
As the wife of a retired officer...Good for him! Don’t apologize for doing your job!
You know what’s funny about this whole thing? Gates doesn’t even look “black,” and everyone knows it. He’s like a pale Steve Urkell.
Every once in a while, nerdy white guys get arrested, too.

Turns out the good professor was NOT arrested for burglary after all.
He was arrested for disorderly conduct: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2009/0723092gates1.html
“...prominent black Harvard University professor...”
####
I wonder what is “prominent” about him.
What did he invent?
What of substance has he produced?
How many lives has he made better by running say a profitable enterprise, providing healthccare, protecting the public or some other useful service?
I’d say the simple police officer who busted him is MUCH more “prominent” than this talentless loudmouth.
Zer0 played his cards right to deflect the discussion off of his deathcare and rambling press conference. People are discussing this issue that affects only a couple people instead of the real issue at hand that will affect us all.
I don’t really care about the local police issues that will not affect me but I do care about the power grab and total restructuring of our health care system that will enslave us all.
Stay focused on the real issue not the smoke and mirrors.
Did Obama comment on the Knoxville Horror? How about the Cleveland beatings on the 4th of July? Guess not....
Pepper spray was called for and he didn't use it!
If so, they will lose eventually in public opinion. Obama not only needlessly stuck his nose into it simply because he is the same skin color of Gates but went on to make the stupidest of jokes about how he would be shot (presumably by the Secret Service) if he tried to jimmy the lock at the White House. Obama should have simply deflected the reporters question with the truth: he didn't know all of the particulars of the incident and thus couldn't really comment.
He gets to work on a self-flaggelating Liberal bastion of irrationality that kicked out Teddy Kennedy for cheating.
Hah-vard
Does ZerO ever argue for the white half?
Legally, probably smart not to apologize. He did nothing wrong. If he apologizes might be tantamount to saying he was wrong which could be used in lawsuit?
I wish the cop would say he thinks that the professor tried to get arrested so as to claim racial profiling. I think that is what happened.
