The White House today sought to soften the tone of President Obama’s criticism of police in Cambridge, Mass. for arresting prominent professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. in his own home earlier this week.
Asked about the incident at his nationally televised news conference last night, Obama said he thought “any of us would be pretty angry” about such an incident and that “the Cambridge Police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home.”
But this morning after several major police unions expressed outrage over the remarks, White House spokesman Robert L. Gibbs told reporters that Obama does not regret what the president said about the Cambridge Police Department, but he had not meant to specifically criticize James M. Crowley, the Cambridge police sergeant who made the arrest.
"Let me be clear,” Gibbs said. “ He was not calling the officer stupid, okay? He was denoting that . . . at a certain point the situation got far out of hand, and I think all sides understand that."
Crowley defended his actions Thursday, saying in an interview with Boston Globe that he would not apologize for arresting Gates and he is “not a racist.” Several police organizations expressed disappointment with Obama for weighing in on what they see as a local policing issue.
“Statements like that made without the facts don’t do much to assuage any mistrust between the community and the men and women that protect it,” said Jim Pasco, executive director of the National Fraternal Order of Police.

The President was calling Gibbs stupid.
I’ve gotta say this;
At some point, you’ve gotta feel sorry for Gibbsy.
Sure, he sounds like an asshole at times.
But, he’s the guy that has the difficult job of translating EVERY STUPID THING that Obammy says the next day.
At some point, a certain level of cognitive dissonance kicks in, and he’s internally conflicted by what he knows Obammy meant and what he has to say. I think that dissonance manifests itself in his asshole-ness.
Not a job I’d ever want, but give Gibbsy credit for trying.
I may have to send a contribution to the NRCC. I approve of this message.

But, to be honest, in private he says the same thing about me.

I will have to be in the minority and agree with Gibbs.
Think about yourself. Have you done anything stupid? Does it mean you are stupid?
There is a difference.
That said, I think Obama does stupid things and I think he has mental problems. I don’t think he is stupid. He is quite clever. Look at what he has accomplished..he pulled the wool over the eyes of the American people on his way to Socialism.
“Stupidly” is another name for stupid so yes he was calling the Police Officer stupid.
