Toyota Motor Corp. has decided to liquidate its stake in a California manufacturing plant that it jointly operated with General Motors, a Japanese news agency reported Thursday.
The Japanese carmaker will begin negotiating with the "Old GM" starting next week, Kyodo News reported, citing unnamed company officials.
Toyota spokesman Mike Goss would not confirm that the Japanese automaker had made a final decision on the fate of Fremont, California-based New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., also known as NUMMI. Goss said Toyota will begin negotiations with the GM officials about the plant and added that the company is conducting an "extensive review" of its production needs.

Doing my schadenfreude dance. I am sorry to see CA suffer but I think it’s going to take a lot worse to wake up the voters in that banana republic.
“Calling Roger Penske...”
Penske is too smart to want to deal with UAW workers. He prefers genuine workers in the non-union South.
No way Penske would take over a plant in forced-unionization California.
In fact, no way anyone with a clue would set up a plant in a forced-unionization state to build *anything* at this point.
Trust me, if Penske goes in there, he’ll have HIS way. Neither the Gov. Motors, the State, nor the unions are in a position to bargain right now.
Besides, if Toyota and GM close it down, it’s a whole new ballgame for Penske Saturn.
Why? Closing this plant doesn’t affect Saturn in any way.
Also, California would have to totally change much of their labor code to get rid of their mandated unionization. Pretty much anyone opening an auto plant in CA *has* to have the UAW there. Good luck with that idea when they can’t even agree on how to balance the budget.
Penske bought Saturn, and he’s looking for places to manufacture them. He is already in talks with foreigners, and looking at some locations in the South East.
There is no way in hell that he would take over this plant.
We hardly knew ya, NUMMI
Really? Why?
This is exactly what I wanted Toyota to do when I heard GM was backing out of that venture.
What part of “California is a mandatory-union state” did you not get? That’s why nobody else has opened a car plant in CA in decades. The legislature there will *never* change the law - look at all the power the unions wield there!
Penske is not stupid. He won’t deal with the UAW.
“Anyone that thought Toyota was going to operate a UAW plant without GM was dreaming.”
The workers can always apply for one of Obama’s RED PILLS!
Toyota's involvement was the only thing that made this car worth buying.
There are about to be meetings around the plant in a few minutes. Going to be an interesting day.
If anything, root for Penske to buy the defunct Ford plant in Atlanta.
GM has been a hideously mismanaged company for years. The results speak for themselves.
There is no law in Cali. declaring unions mandatory.
No, Penske isn’t stupid, that’s why wherever he goes, whatever he does, he gets his terms or he takes his ball and goes somehwere else.
Perhaps I should say the REALLY OLD GM that I worked for way back when shocks were my business at DELCO in Dayton and we had a fine system going...the best!
When was that, 1950? :P
