Hours before they were to leave office after eight troubled years, George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney had one final and painful piece of business to conclude. For over a month Cheney had been pleading, cajoling, even pestering Bush to pardon the Vice President's former chief of staff, I. Lewis (Scooter) Libby. Libby had been convicted nearly two years earlier of obstructing an investigation into the leak of a covert CIA officer's identity by senior White House officials. The Libby pardon, aides reported, had become something of a crusade for Cheney, who seemed prepared to push his nine-year-old relationship with Bush to the breaking point and perhaps past it over the fate of his former aide. "We don't want to leave anyone on the battlefield," Cheney argued. More Related Cheney In Twilight President Bushs Easy Commute Bush Commutes Libby Sentence Bush had already decided the week before that Libby was undeserving and told Cheney so, only to see the question raised again. A top adviser to Bush says he had never seen the Vice President focused so single-mindedly on anything over two terms. And so, on his last full day in office, Jan. 19, 2009, Bush would give Cheney his final decision.

Yet Time Magazine conveniently forgets the tons of pardons President Clinton gave in his last moments in office....
....now that was eight troubling years...
NO! Of course not.
Obomas poll numbers are dropping so fast, I'll bet people all over the country are wishing they could turn back time and have the Bush years back.
Is there buyers remorse out there? You bet there is! The college kids are pi$$ed because they were "deceived". This isn't what they thought they were voting for. They learned a good lesson this time!
Do these intellectually deficient frauds mainline directly into their brains? This article is fairly dripping with innuendo, lies, and damn lies.
I tried to read this thing before I logged on to FR and could not believe the irresponsible, pathetic, self-serving rewriting of history before my eyes.
Holder is “struggling?” Is this to give Holder cover to prosecute Bush aides? Are they using Bush’s “crime and punishment” stance on Libby as moral equivalent for Holder to press forward with a special prosecutor?
I hate these people.
Trouble is, some people on here from the “right” are doing the same thing-blaming Bush for where we are! It seems to me that they’re blaming Cheney too! I wonder if they realize that? Every time they trash GWB, they’re trashing Cheney too, by extension!
No, of course not. It was a rhetorical question. But you knew that.
Yes, the Puerto Rican terrorists come to mind.
I see no reason NOT to blame Bush and Cheney for where we are. They betrayed the small government ideals the CONSERVATIVE party should stand for, consistently during their time in office. The GOP needs to get back to getting Govt out of our lives, but then again, I’m not one of these neo (new) conservatives.
It is easy to be taken in by the posturing of politicians and project our own values onto them. That's what their image makers count on.
You are wrong........just another HIT piece....to take peoples eyes off the present nightmare.
I am disappointed Bush did not pardon Libby. I think he got railroaded by a zealous prosecutor.
Repubs are ascendant. Time to trash Cheney again...with a dose of dissension between Cheney and Bush thrown in.
Covert? She was not qualified to be classed as such.
Who should go to jail in this story?
The prosecutor who knew from the start that she did not qualify for the covert label. He also knew who had talked to the Press and it was no one close to Cheney.
Not only he should have gone to jail but also lost his license to "practice law" for wasting millions of dollars of taxpayers money to keep his name in the MSM.
They made a run to trap the VP and failed.
What a"useful idiot"! Newsweek was relishing this while it was a "front page news goose chase” and are still trying to milk it. This is a prime case of "drive by reporting". What a pathetic press you have. No wonder I pay extra to my cable company to get FOX News.
Just waiting for Newsweek to close shop and then I will throw a party to mark its long awaited end!
For most of us, Bush proved to be a mixed bag. For example, decreasing taxes, but at the same time, increasing spending.
We have every right to call him on those areas where he disappointed us, but we’ll sing his praises on those areas where he did right.
We can sing no praises of the Libs and Dems.
No argument there, although I daresay your CBC is not much better.
Simple truth is that our media wanted to take down Cheney...didn't matter what untruths were told to get the job done.
Problem is that Cheney and the other Bush top guys are all Cold Warriors. If the USSR didn't daunt them, then our home-grown commies can't either.
Stay tuned. Dinosaur media is going down the tubes even faster in coming days/weeks/months.
Sorry but you are NOT "thinking carefully" enough.
I agree. How can you prove someone “lied” about not remembering something anyway? Witch hunt pure and simple.
