LONDON (AFP) – Most passengers would be willing to stand during flights if the fare was free, according to a poll released Wednesday by Irish no-frills airline Ryanair.
More than 80,000 passengers, 66 percent of those polled by Ryanair, said they would be happy to stand during one-hour flights. Thirty-four percent said they wanted a seat.
"With 120,000 passengers voting and 80,000 saying they would stand on board, Ryanair will continue to explore the concept of 'fare free standing' flights with Boeing and the relevant aviation authorities in the US and EU," Ryanair's head of communications Stephen McNamara said.
Under the proposal, passengers would lean on a stool or ledge and wear a seatbelt during take off and landing. Passengers would still have to pay taxes and charges imposed by governments or airport operators.
The online poll showed 42 percent of passengers would stand if the fare was halved compared to 58 percent who wanted a seat.

That was my first thought. But since it’s an Irish airline and if they never enter US airspace, the FARs may never come into play.
If they pack them in tight enough they won't be able to move during turbulance.
I stand on my Korean flights.
14 hours from US to Japan.
I usually get a row 63 seat, right in front of the toilets.
The, you can stand up, go behind your seat and push it waaaay forward.
I often stand 7 or 8 hours for those flights.
I flew from RDU to DEN a few years ago. Four hour flight.
It was a small twin jet, maybe a Bombardier, don’t recall.
Anyway, the seats were like concrete and distorted shape.
Myself and about a dozen passengers finally stood up in the aisle to get some relief from the awful seats.
Spent about half the flight standing.
Um, who will pay for the fuel?
And the pilots?
And the ground crew?
And the plane?
Free? LOL! Why stop there?
Why not ask if they would fly if they paid them to fly?
Safety harness, 3 feet of rope, eye bolt in the floor.

Judging by what I've heard of them, if Ryanair were to hear your idea they may try to steal it.

I mean, it's a 3-hour flight. If someone can't even SIT that long, then sheesh, book a Medivac flight.
I'd take my chances. Better that than have him be a seatmate and you're either smashed against the window or sandwiched between him and someone the size of, oh, say, the next surgeon general.
