Critics Slam Overweight Surgeon General Pick, Regina Benjamin

Dr. Regina M. Benjamin, Obama's pick for the next surgeon general, was hailed as a MacArthur Grant genius who had championed the poor at a medical clinic she set up in Katrina-ravaged Alabama.

But the full-figured African-American nominee is also under fire for being overweight in a nation where 34 percent of all Americans aged 20 and over are obese.

Critics and supporters across the blogsphere have commented on photos of Benjamin's round cheeks, saying she sends the wrong message as the public face of America's health initiatives.

But others support the 52-year-old founder and CEO of Bayou La Batre Rural Health Clinic, citing new research that shows you cannot always judge a book by its cover when it comes to obesity.

RE: “.........the good doctor does not believe that doctors should make a profit.”

You said: “Wow, that should start a stampede to enroll at medical schools. How can anyone resist the opportunity to work free? ;-) “

*********

Agree! When I visited Soviet Union in ‘77 and ‘85, taxi drivers ‘earned’ more than doctors. There’s motivation for you!

Maybe that’s why commie leaders routinely left the country for their healthcare, and those who stayed home were treated by the cream of the crop docs in Moscow?

If people here in the US could witness first-hand the communist/social ‘system’ instead of letting this garbage grab their attention, no one would be in favor. I KNEW before the election last fall how dangerous Zero was/would be. Now, finally, some Americans are waking up and realizing it too.

My bumper sticker: “You Voted for it, Comrade!”

” But it’s not BS that very busy people are often overweight.”

that's a BS excuse...and you know it...”you plan your work and work your plan”

most people I know who are fat don't do squat...literally! LMAO

I can whip anybody on this planet into shape within a year or two.

now don't give me one of those people who are 300# Plus overweight who need gastric bypass surgery but anyone up to around 100# over and I can get ‘em in shape within a year.
they'll certainly be in better shape than the Surgeon General who probably doesn't even belong to a “health club” and doesn't even know where one is LOL!!!

I congratulate her on her future job as the spokeswoman for the 'Burger Alert Remote'.

Every overweight citizen should have one.

If I had a dime for every time I saw someone riding a bicycle or doing something strenuous with a cigarette in their mouth... I would be a millionaire...

Are you really Non sequitur?

I’m stating, what I believe to be, a fact. I’m NOT making an excuse for them. LOL

Well, I’m 5’8”, 165, and 57. I’ve struggled to keep my weight down, and I can still wear my Army uniform from 1970-78. {it’s just a leeetle bit tight in the lower belly, though}. haha.

My wife called me a fatty a few weeks ago. ha! I said you weighed 98 lbs when we married, and now you weigh 120-125. I’m at the exact weight I was 17 years ago when we met.

Now, who’s the fatty, girl? LOL (at 5’2”, and 50, she’s not really, though.)

“Katrina-ravaged Alabama”

Seeing as I was in Mississippi at the time, this comment made me smirk.

“The lady appears to be a nice person. Of all the things to pick on to delay her , they say she is too fat.”

Don’t be condescending. The lady eats a coop-full of good fried chicken every week and washes it down with buttered grits, a few peach cobbler cakes, two dozen rashers of bacon, a couple dozen of scrambled eggs, a few pecks of buttered and salted collard greens, many plates full of fried pork chops, 10 or so bowls of barbecued beans, a plate or more of cheese cake - for lunch - and 10 to 20 pounds of deep fried perch, with good ol’ southern barbecued pork - pulled - for a snack.

The lady likes to eat. Some survive the binge, some don’t. Let’s watch.

Heard on a radio chat show last week that the good doctor does not believe that doctors should make a profit.

To be fair to her, most doctors believe this... but they define "breaking even" very generously.

And I'm saying, ANYONE who WANTS to get in shape CAN!

and this Surgeon General is NOT the example that should be set for a Surgeon General...aside from being VERY overweight, she probably has high blood pressure & high cholesterol...for starters!

and “IF” she wanted to, she'd be in shape! PERIOD

Now, I gotta go for my run! LOL

cyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

NO HEALTH CARE FOR YOU, DR B 'Don't treat the old, unhealthy [obese] say UK doctors' "Doctors are calling for NHS treatment to be withheld from patients who are too old or who lead unhealthy lives. Smokers, heavy drinkers, the obese and the elderly should be barred from receiving some operations, according to doctors, with most saying the health service cannot afford to provide free care to everyone." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1576704/Dont-treat-the-old-and-unhealthy-say-doctors.html

If she is overweight, big deal. The real question is why we need a Surgeon General. (I’m afraid I know the answer — because we are living in a nannystate.)
