Dr. Regina M. Benjamin, Obama's pick for the next surgeon general, was hailed as a MacArthur Grant genius who had championed the poor at a medical clinic she set up in Katrina-ravaged Alabama.
But the full-figured African-American nominee is also under fire for being overweight in a nation where 34 percent of all Americans aged 20 and over are obese.
Critics and supporters across the blogsphere have commented on photos of Benjamin's round cheeks, saying she sends the wrong message as the public face of America's health initiatives.
But others support the 52-year-old founder and CEO of Bayou La Batre Rural Health Clinic, citing new research that shows you cannot always judge a book by its cover when it comes to obesity.

From her Wiki (which has been totally revamped in the last2 weeks)...
“Also in accepting her nomination, Benjamin described her own hardships faced by disease and illness in her own family. She noted her brother, who died of HIV, as well as her father, who died of high blood pressure and diabetes, and her mother who died of lung cancer.
All of which, she implied, were “preventable diseases.”
So, being the “genius” Doctor she is supposed to be, why didn’t she prevent them?
That pic is huge and eats up bandwidth like crazy. I have 5 meg up and 1.5 down, and it took several minutes to load. LOL
Here in Floriduh! it is not unusual to see a grossly overweight middle-aged man on a motorcycle, with no helmet, and smoking cigarette while driving.
lol she’s House, M.D. Get it?
I didn’t realize it was that big when I posted it but it sort of adds to the effect no?
Why is a an orange an orange, but a banana not a “yellow?”
"Setting an example for Americans everywhere."
Ah, he also likes young tight booty from the looks he gave it on his last trip.
Perfect—a morbidly obese Surgeon General.
She can hide his cigarettes in her flowing moo moo.
The perfect bunch to impose a marxist healthcare system on us.
Actually, busy, successful people are often over weight.
Work 14-18 hours, no time for a proper meal, exercise, or sleep, will do that to you.
chunky munky?
Wow, that should start a stampede to enroll at medical schools. How can anyone resist the opportunity to work free? ;-)
And I “think” Hussein could have found at least ONE PERSON in America with an M.D. who was “fit” to be the Surgeon General...and he/she could have even been “Black” to satisfy Hussein's own prejudice.
...and once again, white males need not apply.
Wasn’t the whole point of the civil rights movement in the mid-60s to make race a non-issue? And then gender as well?
Hmmm. Seems like race and gender are everything with this guy, when it comes to appointments. Unless cronyism beats race and gender to the punch...
I’ve always thought surgeon general was a dumb post anyway, so I don’t really care how chunky she is.
I agree that he could have, and should have. But it’s not BS that very busy people are often overweight.
Man - Chaka Khan has really let herself go...
RE: “Obama appoints a “tax cheat” head of the IRS and a Racist judge who doesn’t pay her dental bils to the Supreme Court; so what is the big(pardon the pun) deal, if he appoints some oveweight woman to be Surgeon General...”

Yeah, no biggie — this fat middle aged ‘minority’ female probably won’t last long anyway. She sure fits the profile of one who is at the very least, pre-diabetic, and thus predisposed to heart disease as well.
Uh, I'm pretty sure you can...
