Black scholar accuses police of racism after being arrested trying to break into home

Henry Louis Gates Jr, America's most famous black scholar, has accused local police of racism after he was arrested while trying to break into his own home near Harvard University.

According to a police report, officers in Cambridge, Massachusetts, were called to the house on Thursday afternoon after a woman said she had seen a man "wedging his shoulder into the front door as to pry the door open".

According to police, an officer ordered the man to identify himself and Prof Gates refused.

He allegedly began calling the officer a racist, repeatedly saying: "This is what happens to black men in America." Officers said they tried to calm down the 58-year-old academic only for him to tell them: "You don't know who you're messing with." Prof Gates, who was named as one of the 25 most influential Americans by Time magazine in 1997, was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge after police said he "exhibited loud and tumultuous behaviour". He was released later that day and is due to appear in court next month. He is the director of Harvard University's WEB du Bois Institute for African and African American Research.

His lawyer is Ogletree. Another guy with a chip on his shoulder.

Ogletree goes around trying to rent apartments and then shows up with witnesses. Probably hoping he will be turned down and he can claim racism.

I suspect that racism wasn’t INFLUENCING the officer, but that something WAS influencing the “Black Scholar” (tell me how that headline isn’t PROFILING?!?!?!), maybe some alcohol or pot to cause his ‘tumultuous’ behavior??

This guy was just dying to get some kind of life affirming “proof” of the crap he’s been spewing for a living.

If I was black I would swing by his pad this afternoon with a prybar and Uhaul.

“...woman said she had seen a man “wedging his shoulder into the front door as to pry the door open.”

A little common sense here, if his neighbors didn’t know who he was, how would a policeman? If the caller was simply driving by, and Prof. Gates was in casual or running/jogging attire, how would she know? All the officer had to say is, “Can I help you, sir?” That would make an ordinary criminal bolt. Sounds like both parties get their exercise jumping to conclusions...case dismissed.

And if the cops had seen someone other than this man climbing into the house through the window and had not collared him, this dude would be screaming the cops were racist for not protecting a black man's home.

These professional victims are a very predictable one-note band.

>Henry Louis Gates Jr, America’s most famous black scholar<

Never heard of him - I HAVE heard of Dr. Walter Williams (as have millions of Americans). Oh, but that’s right - he’s a conservative. Doesn’t count. My bad. /s

And this is why some predominantly “black” neighborhoods are being “de-policed”.

Let them call Louis Farrakhan.

I wonder if this was a set up. First, place an anonymous call and say a black man was breaking into your house. Then when police arrive and just ask routine questions act as belligerently as possible and deliberately provoke an incident. Third, play the victim of racism game and become a hero to the Harvard left and threaten a civil rights lawsuit for a big payday. Believe me, this kind of stuff happens.

Is this the guy that filed the “forty acres and a mule” lawsuit some time ago? I’ve been reading the comments at the paper’s site. There are several hundred of them, and this was mentioned.

Sounds like the neighbor was trying to do the man a favor by calling the cops when she thought someone was trying to break into his house.

If I was the neighbor, I’d approach him and say, “Due to the disrespectful way you treated the police, if I ever see someone trying to break into your house again, I will NOT call the cops. Hope you aren’t home when that happens, turdbrain.”

You’re correct. If I get stopped, I pull over safely with signals. Shut down the car. Roll down the windows and place both of my hands on the steering wheel. When he asks for ID, I ask permission to reach for it in my back pocket. I gotten out of a lot of tickets using that simple procedure and even when I get one, the officer is always cool and relaxed.

Treat them like a dick and suddenly that speeding ticket goes to having no front plate, you didn’t use turn signals and plus, they’ll make you sweat while they run your name through every database they have access to.

>this actually happened to me once and I am white. I locked myself out of the house and was trying to get in a window when the cops showed up

Me too. I'm white, too.
Live in a quiet suburb,
locked my keys inside.

Police saw me pushing
open my bedroom window.
It was tense at first,

but after they saw
my driver's license, no prob.
It made me happy

the neighborhood cops
were keeping such a close eye
on the neighborhood
!

Had a similar deal in a cousin’s apartment in NYC. Door wasn’t locked, cops came barging in, I looked up from supper, alone, and asked ‘em what they wanted. They claimed a silent burglar alarm sent ‘em. I didn’t know about any alarms, but I had keys that fit the door on the table beside me, so they left. Later found out they’d hit the wrong floor.

In other words, he is a professor of the Black Panthers, playing the victim, affirmative action, blaming whitey for every mistake they make, demanding special treatment, and presuming to be above the law.
Guys, this turd was merely practicing what he teaches.

Exactly - they should let it be known that he’s on his own for protection against crime.

Even with his jackass attitude he would not have been arrested but he followed the cops into his front yard berating and threatening them AFTER they had decided to leave.

BTW this is what your college tuition dollars go for. And Queer Studies.

The Gates incident represents in microcosm the entire race-baiting, victim-playing industry that so plagues America.

I hear that Al Sharpton, the biggest racist in America, is getting involved.

Neighborhoods are being de-policed for this kind of crap and worse. The cops already have to wear bullet proof vests and have to be suspicious of everyone when they are in the hood. After that kind of abuse from this “scholor”, I’d bet the next time there is a call from that house, the cops may take a while to get there if they go at all.
