The Rev. Al Sharpton is taking up the banner of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., accusing Cambridge cops of racism for arresting Gates, and vowing to stand by his side at an arraignment next month.
“I’ve heard of driving while black, and I’ve heard of shopping while black. But I’ve never heard of living in a home while black,” said Sharpton, a New York minister who has made a national name for himself by seizing on cases of alleged racism.
Gates, 58, an acclaimed Harvard University academic and black-history documentarian, was arrested Thursday after an incident at his Cambridge home. A witness, 40-year-old Lucia Whalen of Malden, had alerted the cops that a man was “wedging his shoulder into the front door” at Gates’ house “as to pry the door open,” police reported.
A law enforcement source said Gates apparently had locked himself out. When Sgt. James Crowley arrived, he said Gates already was inside. But when he was asked to provide identification, Gates allegedly snapped, “No, I will not!” Police said Gates’ front-porch tirade about racism “alarmed” passers-by drawn to the uproar outside his Cambridge home. As Crowley tried to question him, police said Gates bellowed, “This is what happens to black men in America!” Crowley claimed in his report he tried to calm Gates, but wrote that Gates “shouted, ‘You don’t know who your (sic) messing with!”
After calling Crowley “a racist,” according to police reports, the professor was charged with disorderly conduct and released for a $40 fee. Gates is scheduled to be arraigned on a single charge of disorderly conduct Aug. 26 at Cambridge District Court in Medford. The maximum penalty Gates faces if convicted is a $150 fine.

So...the next time the cop is called to investigate a black man breaking into a home in that neighborhood, the cop will go to the doughnut shop. And if the house belongs to Gates, he will deserve getting robbed.
What gets me is a Harvard professor, one of the most prominent universities, is screaming about racism. I can see how much racism has held him back.

My understanding from reading the story yesterday is that it is Harvard housing, and that Harvard police and maintenance personnel were also there during this incident.
Has racist Gates filed any formal complaints yet?
I doubt he will, because he was the perp and the racist and he’ll probably have his butt handed to him.
Honestly—if you act hysterical and belligerent towards cops, no matter what your race is you are getting you butt tossed in a cell for at least a few hours. I do believe the cop acted like the typical bully that some of us occasionally encounter on the highway or elsewhere—but had this elitist “prof” behaved a bit more civilized then this would never have happened. The race angle is moot at this time just because of the circumstances:
1. Woman sees man struggling with door
2. Woman calls cops
3. Elitist Prof approached by cop and acts hysterical towards cop
4. Cop supposed to walk away at that point?

REAL recism would have been exemplified by the white neighbor seeing a man trying to force entry into a black neighbor’s home and failing to act.

HINT EVERYBODY: Cops are already on edge and nervy when you meet them—being courteous and cooperative goes a long way.
Read the police report. If this were a white guy he’d have been arrested within seconds for not cooperating and showing ID.
This guy was given ample tome to chill. He ended up following the officer outside his home, screaming and yelling “Black Man in America” crap. And was arrested.
These race hucksters make me ill.

Thanks for posting that. What an absolutely heinous crime and an unbelievable double standard concerning the reaction to this case and the Duke lacrosse hoax! Where is the outrage, the New Black Panthers, the pot banging protesters,the candle light vigils, the Gang of 88, the endless sanctimonious editorials, fat Al Sharpton, fatter Selena Roberts, Jessie ‘The Jerk’ Jackson, the satellite trucks all over campus, etc, etc, etc. What a digrace!
Well, it is Cambridge. The most liberal/lefty town and Kumbaya in Massachusetts. And of course these people are not racist, unless there is a black person in their neighborhood. Or near them. (With the exception of a thin lipped, metrosexual Obama type). In which case they’ll hit 911 faster than a lefty trying to get out of a lunch check.
I’d like to see this guys reaction if a guy broke into his house and when the cops showed the burglar told him he lived there so the cops left without asking for proof.

i believe white or black or purple or pink if you are asked for i.d. and do not provide it you can be detained or arrested just for that...so wtf is racist sharpton complaining about....if it wasn’t for the jacksons, sharptons, et al keeping racism alive and well only to line their own pcokets we wouldn’t be having this problems....
