Major Cities' Plummeting Crime Rates Mystifying
WaPo ^ | 07/20/2009

Violent crime has plummeted in the Washington area and in major cities across the country, a trend criminologists describe as baffling and unexpected.

The District, New York and Los Angeles are on track for fewer killings this year than in any other year in at least four decades. Boston, San Francisco, Minneapolis and other cities are also seeing notable reductions in homicides.

I think forensics have advanced enough, especially w/ DNA, that a lot of these guys might just think about the odds of getting caught and convicted. Business video cams also help.

Also....the concealed carry law where it prevails, so many potential victims have armed themselves....the career criminal has to be aware of that.

It’s probably been passed down the chain of command that the police with their ‘slobbering love affair’ for this president should at minimum skew the statistics or not report them at all. It happened to me when I was jumped from behind by five or so young blacks in their late teens to early twenties and the police failed to report it as a crime until I went to the hospital and the police were called in to make a report. This happens a lot and it’s reasonable to believe that D.C., Phil, NYC, Chic, LA, Miami, etc. are hotbeds for this coverup.

Lancaster PA for example, is turing into a gang hell-hole.

I'm hearing that York is no party either.

"Gun related incidents in York."

Now we are all putting in alarm systems...

I always roar at those Brinks home security commercials. The invaders would have you turned inside out in the time it takes someone to get there.

I know what you mean.

"You better get out of here! I've got Todd on the phone!"

Only effective on a fool, unfortunately it sells a lot of systems.

I’m hoping the loud alarm will scare them off, or at least give me time to grab a weapon.

” ... because the gangs have spread out to smaller cities and towns.”

My mid-sized college town has experienced a 50% increase in burglaries in the past two years. Flat-screen TVs are a specialty of the local B & E thugs.

The concept that the manager in charge of the program did not know what makes up the data is inconceivable, even if he's "not a computer guy."

He should be fired, demoted or retired and the chief has more slainin to do.

From personal experience I believe strongly that many crimes are being thwarted by a massive increase in the number of law abiding citizens now carrying concealed weapons. My wife was recently followed back to her car by a gang of black thugs who were making disgusting sexual, and threatening comments as they closed in.

When they got to within approximately 20ft she turned and confronted them, shifting her bags and clutching her holster purse in a way she has practiced many times. She did not display her weapon, but they got the message from her defensive stance and bold words that this 100 pound grandma was not the ideal victim after all. Thugs know the kind of confidence she displayed has got something to back it up. Retreating was a very wise choice; my wife comes from a military family and acts without hesitation. If the gun had come out, it would have been firing.

We live near Seattle; my wife has a bunch of liberal friends. At one time it may have been a stigma to tell them that you carry a gun but now they all want to see them and find out more. She has steered many in the right path to responsible gun ownership. “Gun control” is defeated one new gun owner at a time, especially when you are talking about Seattle ultra-libs.

She sets up military history displays at schools. At a school in Sedro Wooly which is an outlying are near the Cascade mountains she got into a discussion with a group of mothers and female teachers. Everyone of them carried a handgun. They did not have them with them at the school because it is not allowed but every last one of the women had started carrying a concealed weapon in the last year. They had a long conversation comparing what types of weapons they carried and what they did to get training and keep their skill levels current. This was a group of women determined not to be victims. I am certain that the crime rate going down has everything to do with people deciding that they are not willing to be victimized anymore.

My wife's life was saved ten years ago by a young soldier who was armed and had two young kids with him, but that is another story. Someday maybe we will be in a situation where the favor will be returned.

All these numbers are too easy to manipulate or outright falsify. ....or spin

Surfing the radio stations on the way to work this morning. Some Talking Head was on. She said that "Obama's Poll Numbers were "Reaganesque" - Reagan's were about the same at this point in his administration, he faced much the same problems as Obama, blah blah blah".

I changed the channel, too much spin. Completely different Talking Head on Station #2 was discussing Obama, and how his poll numbers "Mirrored Ronald Reagan's, 6 months into his administration".

I Said "AAAIIAIAIIIII!" and flipped the channel again. This time, two morning news jocks were interviewing each other. Topic of discussion? "How Obama's poll numbers look just like Ronald Reagan's".

Lies are bad enough, but these are DUMB lies. At least, stagger the talking points a little bit throughout the day.

The good news is that Libs won't get much traction comparing their dear leader to Ronald Reagan. Conservatives will call "BS" in a heartbeat (as I did). Liberals hate Reagan. So, I guess, overall, it's not a bad idea. :-)

The manipulation is pervasive and obvious—to us. However, it serves to reinforce the mush that occupies the vacuuous craniums of dembots.

Sorry to hear that. At least you didn't get charged with anything.

This exact thing happened to a buddy of mine in college. Got the crap kicked out of him, on the way back to his dorm by a bunch of drunks. Police were thinking of charging HIM with the crime (race-based, you know) before cooler heads prevailed.

Didn't stop the school newspaper from savaging him in good shape though. Fortunately, it was at the end of the year and my friend was graduating anyway. He really didn't care what some thirdrate hack in a diddlysquat podunk school newspaper published...he was headed on to Med School.

If you are referring to the hypothesis that the rise in legal abortions among poor women in the 1970’s and 1980’s reduced the potentially crime-prone population of the last decade or so, this has been convincingly refuted - so much so that Steve Levitt has suffered considerable professional damage because of the mistakes uncovered in his research on this.
