In the health debate, liberals sing Hari Krishnas to the "public option" -- a new federal insurance program like Medicare -- but if it's good enough for the middle class, then surely it's good enough for the political class too? As it happens, more than a few Democrats disagree.
On Tuesday, the Senate health committee voted 12-11 in favor of a two-page amendment courtesy of Republican Tom Coburn that would require all Members and their staffs to enroll in any new government-run health plan. Yet all Democrats -- with the exceptions of acting chairman Chris Dodd, Barbara Mikulski and Ted Kennedy via proxy -- voted nay.
In other words, Sherrod Brown and Sheldon Whitehouse won't themselves join a plan that "will offer benefits that are as good as those available through private insurance plans -- or better," as the Ohio and Rhode Island liberals put it in a recent op-ed. And even a self-described socialist like Vermont's Bernie Sanders, who supports a government-only system, wouldn't sign himself up.

All government employees, including Congressman and Senators, should never have access to a health care plan which provides service more quickly than the health care plans of typical Americans could provide.
In other words, if Harry the Homeless Bum gets in line for Teddys brain surgeon before Teddy gets in line, then Harry the Homeless Bum STAYS in line ahead of Teddy for the services of that brain surgeon.
Yeah, that’ll survive conference.
They can probably vote by proxy in their subcommittees, but I wonder if Kennedy was even aware this vote was happening or if his instructions to his proxy was something like, “Vote ‘yes’ on anything to do with the health care bill.”

We would have to hire thousands of new government employees with bloated union wages, their own DIFFERENT health care plan, pensions, etc and all with the "till death do us part" caveat! Imagine the contracts for endless "studies" creating unproductive and redundant committees, czar appointment, stress-relief outings (Soc. Sec), etc. It turns out that it is all just another JOBS program cloaked in their veil of "compassion"!
BTTT
“Teddy should be being counseled about his death choices”
I wonder if anyone from Mary Jo Kophecne’s family would like to be the one to conduct that counseling session.
I have the same plan that Congress has. Yes it is excellent insurance. What isn’t mentioned in this article is the cost. My husband’s monthly premium is $600 a month and his portion is 40% of the total premium
I don’t know how much premiums are outside the government as I’ve never had to shop for them, but do you know what kind of insurance $600 a month would get?
This needs to be made into an ad pronto!!!
____________
Why aren’t the millionaires and doctors in this country banding together and running ad all over the place against Obama care?
How in sam hell did our government get so perverted?
“YOU FIRST, CONGRESS” bump
They can dish it out ,but can’t take it.
Lower the cost: 1.) make everybody pay something, no exceptions; 2.) limit it to only US citizens ( no illegal aliens); 3.) Exclude those who want to buy their own private health insurance or establish their own plan; 4.)Exclude those who do not want it and make it irrevocable); 5.) do not cover any “voluntary” or “cosmetic” elective procedures (e.g. abortions, breast augmentations, vasectomies, nose jobs, hair implants).
How right you are. It is another welfare program especially for the illegals.
And so do most of us (the folks)! We are very happy with our health insurance and we don’t want it changed.
We need a good political cartoon, I can’t draw so here is what I think would capture this best.
Have a cartoon of a senator or house rep, maybe Pelosi and Ted Kennedy, have them surrounded by Doctors who are dressed up nicely and giving them checkups, One Nice Doctor says “Your MRI test is ready Mrs. Pelosi”. Then show in another panel the American people lined up in a line that extends tot he horizon, a now serving sign that says now serving 01, while an over stressed failure of a doctor work feverishly on the one person. The doctor says “The state can’t afford an MRI for you so take these pain pills and get back in line”.
Caption it with “Congress refuses national health care for their own cushy health care plan: A bitter pill to swallow”
Or Caption it with “They WON’T have what we will be having” or something equally witty.
That is because some animals (pigs INDEED) are more equal than others.
Teddy would have voted nay if he thought he was going to still be alive. Surely Obamacare will finish him off if he is still living.
Congress TRULY believes they are elitist ROYALTY and deserve better than us peons!
