In recent months, actor and comedian Paul Rodriguez has made known his defection from the Democratic party because of the party's lack of interest in helping drought-stricken farmers like himself in California who have had water denied to them by court order under the Endangered Species Act to save an endangered fish, the delta smelt. As he addressed the 2009 Annual California Republican Assembly Convention in May, Rodriguez complained that the fundraising support he has given to environmental groups in the past has come back to hurt him and his family: "I always saw myself as an environmentalist. ... Ive funded many of these things, I guess, because Ive performed for them. Every time they call, you go there not really knowing what youre backing, not knowing that those dollars are going to turn around and, and hurt me, hurt those I love the most." The complete audio of Rodriguez's speech can be found here.
As he recounted that environmentalists compare the delta smelt to the canary in a coal mine, he quipped that environmentalists treat the farmer like the canary. Rodriguez quoted his uncle who used to be a coal miner: "The job of the canary is to, you know, we were digging and were looking at the canary, were digging and looking, when the canary dies, man, you run the hell out of there! That canarys job is to die so you live, see?
He continued: "And that really got to me, and I said, 'They got it wrong. They want the farmer to die and the canary to live.'
Rodriguez, the son of Mexican immigrants, also spoke of his late father's admiration for America, and the good fortune one has in just getting to live in this country: "He had a deep love for this country.

Socialism sounds good until you have to live in it...
A liberal mugged by reality. Welcome aboard, Mr. Rodriguez.
Another target on the firing range. He should be ready for whatever the Democrats and State run media are going to throw at him.
Welcome to the Titanic, Mr. Rodriguez. Quick, choose your deck chair before they start rearranging them again.
This is a real shock because he has had some very inflammatory things to say about Republicans and conservatives in the past.
Politics aside, I always thought that this guy is one funny dude.
Can’t people just band together and just kill the “endangered species” like kangaroo rats and push them along to their extinct fate?
We’ve all got to wake up some time. Better sooner than later. Welcome to reality, Paul.
The Central Valley farmers are really hurting. Soon the nation will be hurt by the escalating prices of fruits and vegetables. We are also looking at skyrocketing water prices down here in the LA Basin. Our water rates are projected to rise by $400/yr per family. A lot of money to maybe save a tiny fish. What are these people thinking??
Just another piece of evidence that the Left is driven first and foremost by resentment.
He either learned his lesson or just another NIMBY. Only time will tell . . .
We will see. When his wallet starts taking it in the shorts over his supposed switch then we will find out where his heart is really at.
Guy’s as funny as a socket wrench, and no doubt will have a re-conversion once he’s gotten a little publicity from this, and have lots of material from the “inside”.
A Conservative is a Democrat who has been mugged...
That's the problem, they don't think. I would be willing to bet that a majority of Central Valley farmers (especially the Hispanic ones) voted for 0booooooomba & the demoRATs at the local & state level and the federal level. They vote demoRAT out of an automatic reflex action, and cannot even fathom that higher taxes, more spending, more restriction, more gubmint controls comes from the demoRAT politicians (along with RINO support & complacency) who are destroying their livelihood.
My idiotic demoRAT sister-in-law and brother actually think that demoRATs are trying to drill for oil and that Republicans were and are blocking it. I gave all the examples of how it was just the opposite and both their faces glazed over and there was no recognition or intelligence there to grasp the truth.
Such is the brain dead condition of demoRAT voters.
Considering how insane the Democratic party (and the Republican party) is becoming it is easy to recall that quote:
“I didn’t leave the Democrat party, the Democrat party left me.”
*shrug* - The way I see it is that [officials of] both parties are useless, as are the USSC; they have all failed in their oath-bound duties to the Constitution.
A lot more like Paul Rodriguez could be won over to conservatism if there were more real, dynamic leaders espousing the message.
A good speech, but perhaps he would serve Hispancs better if he made it to them.
More will open their eyes to the phoney in the White House, but I don’t know that enough will in time.
November 2010 is still a long ways off and with the ‘blitzkrieg’ manner they are bankrupting America, I only hope we make it.
Not to worry. I'm sure the federal government will just nationalize the farms and everything will work out just fine. When the federal government controls the air, the water, the banks, the auto companies, the hospitals, and all the farms, life is going to be very, very good.
It's a wonder that our nation's founders never thought of it. We could have done this two centuries ago.
