Bill Gates Wants to Control the Weather, TooAnd you thought the Microsoft chairman was powerful before?

Bill Gates already controls your computers. Now he wants to control the weather.

The billionaire Microsoft founder says he has a plan to stop hurricanes in their tracks -- sort of.

Gates filed five patent applications earlier this month, and now they've been published in USA Today.

The ideas propose pumping cold ocean water into a hurricane's path from barges. The water would be sucked up from the deep ocean, where temperatures are colder than at the surface.

Hurricanes get their force from the warm waters of the ocean. Gates' plan would in theory cool the sea surface and thus slow the hurricane and keep it from becoming more powerful.

In the patent applications, the method is "not limited to atmospheric management, weather management, hurricane suppression, hurricane prevention, hurricane intensity modulation [or] hurricane deflection."

I don’t think Gates has done the math...

A fully developed storm involves levels of energy (just in the wind) of 1.3 x 1017 Joules/day or 1.5 x 1012Watts.

This is equivalent to about half the world-wide electrical generating capacity. To pump water from the depths to the surface, it would require more energy than this, since there would be losses...

if he did those powerful storm clouds rolling in of the Great Lakes would approach my house, but then freeze in place and display an error message

Hey Bill, how about donating your vast fortune to the government so they can work on this problem. I’m sure they can more effectively spend the money than you can.

Flipping hypocrite busy body.

Billy wants to give Cobra (and the Joes) a run for their money.

NOW I respect him.
I hope his Weather Dominator turns out better than Destro’s.

Gates’ idea might actually work, with some modification.

Some years ago, a serious technologist came up with an interesting theory. Ocean water has a few millimeter later on its surface of warm water that strongly inhibits evaporation. If you can break up this layer, evaporation jumps. So his idea was to have platforms with vertical wind turbines on them, that would pump enormous amounts of sea water mist into the air. As the mist would descend, it would break up this thin layer over a wide area.

The higher evaporation would raise air humidity significantly, so that when the air went onshore, it would be far more likely to rain on otherwise desert regions.

So Gates’ ships should use their powerful nuclear engines to pump surface level waters, not deep stuff, into the air. This might break up this millimeter thick layer over hundreds of square miles, and with the evaporation, ocean temperatures would be significantly reduced, in this case by 2, 3 or more degrees.

And that would seriously inhibit a hurricane.

Now he thinks he is God too? He is going to control Mother Nature?

Assuming that it is possible to control hurricanes, Central America would become a desert. In this part of the world, we need those hurricanes that pass north of us for the rains they bring.

He is an ignorant idiot.

Well, how is he any different than our idiot congress which thinks it can control the climate with a bill?

This has nothing to do about whose money it is.

It is about the damage it is going to do to Central America.

But I am not losing any sleep over it. It is never going to happen.
