Obama says lost auto jobs are gone Tue Jul 14, 2009 2:36pm EDT

By David Alexander

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama took a dose of reality to Michigan on Tuesday, saying that thousands of jobs lost to the auto industry's downturn are not coming back and it is time to prepare for new industries.

Traveling to Michigan, a state hit hard by job losses as Detroit's Big Three automakers have reeled from the U.S. recession, Obama planned to promote a $12 billion initiative to boost community colleges and increase the graduation rate.

"(The) hard truth is that some of the jobs that have been lost in the auto industry and elsewhere won't be coming back," Obama was to say, according to prepared remarks released by the White House.

"They are casualties of a changing economy. And that only underscores the importance of generating new businesses and industries to replace the ones we've lost, and of preparing our workers to fill the jobs they create," Obama will say.

What the Republicans should do (but won’t) is put together a library of these quotes for use during the 2010 and 2012 campaigns. For example, they could run an ad with a clip of Obama saying earlier in the year that his administration’s actions will ensure the future of the American automobile industry (by forcing GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy?) followed by his quote today saying “The hard truth is that some of the jobs that have been lost in the auto industry and elsewhere won’t be coming back.” This is his idea of saving the American automobile industry?

time to prepare for new industries.

Which ones, specifically? As long as corporations can move to the third world / hire people for slave wages / pollute at will / no OSHA, what are we going to be able to build here competitively?

The cap and trade crap sure isn't going to fix it. So are we going to get out of these stupid trade agreements that encourage manufacturing to go to the third world? What's the plan?

Is there anything written in the Crap & Trade Bill about how they are going to calculate the CO2 output from human exertion from riding bicycles to building windmills?

Has anyone ever seen his college transcripts from Columbia and Harvard? He’s been touted as the smartest president the country has ever had. My guess as to what his transcripts show: mediocre grades at best just like GWB’s and most everyone elses.

Can you imagine Reagan saying something like that during the recession back in '81? The jackals in the press would have torn him apart limb from limb.

But since it's The One saying it...

It's a good thing for Obama that the Democrats canceled the primary in Michigan, or he might have had to say this when it mattered.

Oh, and by the way, we're going to nail small businesses which create 80% of new jobs with huge tax hikes. Good luck!

Is this from the speech he made today that was originally intended to be a Town Hall meeting?

Wonder why he chickened out of the latter?

His plans are to take us down and he’s on the fast track. Who he’s doing it for is the mystery as he clearly can’t operate anything but a mystery.

Autoworkers, don’t be sad. You can harvest the fruits of the Gumdrop Forest or you can get new, Green jobs like producing electricity from unicorn farts.

It’s time to prepare for new industry.
12 billion to Community colleges. Is that Obama’s new industry?

Hey Bama boy, what should I study in this new Community College to prepare me for that unknown, unspecified industry that doesnt exist?

We cant all go to Community college, what do us folks who need work now do? You got any openings for a white man in ACORN? How about appointing me Czar of the unemployed.

Obama planned to promote a $12 billion initiative to boost community colleges and increase the graduation rate.

And work where exactly when they’re done? Just a ploy to keep more young ‘busy’ for the next 4 years (exactly one term- imagine that!) and mired in debt. By the time they ‘graduate’ with a useless degree that won’t get them a job in anything, since there will be no jobs to be had, Obama and his thugs will be off partying in some African paradise that he’s probably setting up for himself right now with the stolen trillions of taxpayer dollars.

“$12 billion initiative to boost community colleges”

The swine in Congress are preparing to pass the `DREAM’ act, and educating `anchor babies’ cost money!

They will all go to community college to learn something that allows them to get a union job in the govt. They are the only ones hiring. The IRS is hiring.(but you must go thru and audit to get the job).

“And that only underscores the importance of generating new businesses and industries to replace the ones we’ve lost, and of preparing our workers to fill the jobs they create....”

Spoken like a guy who has never run anything but a campaign for office.

Running a profitable small business was tough in good times between all of the local, state and federal rules, regulations, fees and taxes—not to mention frivolous lawsuits.

When Cap and Tax and Universal Healthcare kick in the Democrats will kill off many more that are still standing.

Sheesh—you’d be NUTS to start a business in this environment.
