Residents carried their own signs Wednesday evening calling for "peace not hate" in response to a northwest Gainesville church that recently posted a sign with an anti-Islamic message.
At least 80 people gathered on both sides of Northwest 37th Street in front of the Dove World Outreach Center for a prayer vigil organized after the church recently erected a sign proclaiming "Islam is of the devil."
Participants held up their signs and listened to words from Eve MacMaster, pastor of the Emmanuel Mennonite Church, and Saeed R. Kahn, president of the Muslim Association of North Central Florida. The group maintained its vigil for at least an hour as members at the church gathered for a 7 p.m. service.
After learning about the church's red-lettered sign, MacMaster used e-mail to let others in the community know about the vigil.
"We're here to stand in solidarity with our Muslim neighbors," MacMaster said. The purpose of the vigil, she said, was express the goodwill of most citizens and religious people toward Muslims and to "pray for the cleansing of the community."
Kahn thanked everyone -- "those Christians, Jews, atheists who are here" -- who came to the gathering....
Taylor Wright, 18, a recent high school graduate who said he spotted the sign soon after it was posted, said Wednesday's vigil won't be the end of statements against the sign. He and others plan to continue efforts against it and its message today starting at 10 a.m. with a protest in the same location in front of the church.

According to CNN there were thousands of protesters in front of a racist church.
But, Islam IS of the devil. This “can’t we all just get along Christianity” has destroyed the church. So many are unwilling to stand for or against anything, for fear of hurting someone’s feelings.
But it is of the devil.

That church in protected by the First Amendment as are the people protesting the church’s sign.
However, I can’t wait to see what happens when a mosque puts up a sign saying the same thing about Christianity.
Piss on islam and it’s prophet...
Thats good.
Are they in solidarity with us?
Bow down, put your head on the block, and pray.
Nope not my style, I’ll pray when the mag is empty.
There is probably a greater chance of a fire bomb at the church than anything as forthcoming as a sign.
Islam is a race? Could of fooled me, I thought it was a
self destructive cult of personality.
If they studied their faith more than the 6:00 news they would realize that is a true statement.
I doubt they will bother.
Nothing would happen to the mosque.
Christians don’t kill those who hate Christianity, they pray for them.
And anyway, the iman of a mosque with an anti-Christian sign would receive respectful solicitious coverage by the state-run media, and the entire incident would be blamed on Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
The United States Constitution and the Koran are mutually exclusive.
Well, a firebombing of a church would be illegal however, a mosque putting up a sign that stated that Christianity was the devil would be perfectly legal, just as the church in Florida is well within its constitutional rights.
My favorite part is at the end of the story, where the good liberal protesters are up and at ‘em at the crack of 10:00AM. Way to show initiative kids!
“Ill pray when the mag is empty.”

Yes, and I will be praying for another mag.
